Curious about Fire Island...what is it like now? (New York: real estate, rent)

Almost 20 years ago- remember F.I. and how great it was . Has it changed? Does anyone have any pictures? I may be interested in buying a small house there, possibly Ocean Beach. Appreciate any information anyone may have. Thanks!

I know nothing about Fire Island. However, I do remember there being a recent article about it in the New York Times within the past 4-6 months. I believe it was in the real estate section. Maybe you could do a search?

Ocean Beach is awesome, FI is awesome. My cousins rent a place there every summer (around Labor Day) and it's always some of the best time of the year. It's hard to believe that you're still in NY out on FI. Good luck!

They have a huge problem with some "redneck like" father and son police department beating people, curruption, extortion and all sorts of other nice things out there.

Joe, why so bitter, making any and all places on LI seem like the Thunderdome? It seems that everyone other than Joe seems like like FI very much. Ocean Beach has the most nightlife, etc. Some areas are very gay, some familes, etc. You should speak to a RE agent with more intimate knowledge.

It is a beautiful and unique place, though.

that sounds strange. Also unnecessary. You cant even drive a vehicle there. The beaches were beautiful

I play private partys with my band. Its like Macon county Georgia on a hot Saturday night out there.
The cops blast you with 2 million candlepower so you swerve, then pull you over and sit in you side the road in there headlights.

True but its like the OBI scene in the 80s, they want to put all the bars out of biz so they can build condos.
CCGuy Im really not kidding here, long lists of beating by the police. People punched, kicked, internal organs ruptured.

Joe, I know the story, but does that make ALL of FIRE ISLAND a crap hole? I mean, there's police issues all over the world. I don't think this shoudl define the entire area.

Im saying The Fire Island, Oak Beach cops are the most overzealous form of militia on Long Island and perhaps the state.

Considering the limited ways in and out of the island this includes all of the area.

Crazy laws, it is against the law to walk without a shirt, eat ice cream, eat a sandwich, nap in a car, stargaze with a telescope, play a radio!

Considering a nice family picnic on the beach? Think again, because it is a $1000 fine. Fire Island NY is no place for families or "outsiders" to vacation.

The Ocean Beach Police Department "family" beleive Fire Island is their own kingdom to run as they desired. According to one retired NYC detective, "everyone knows these half-assed wanna be cops think they are God and above the law."

Frequent fines, police brutality - roughing up people unnecessarily, and illegitimately hauling people to the police station. The amount of money generated by these tickets and fines is a boon to the town including the board of trustees and the mayor, and as a result this aggressive police abuse goes overlooked.

This police brutality and use of the shield to generate money by fining innocent people is criminal and should be something Gov. Spitzer needs to investigate.
