Brightwaters?
This seems like a really nice area, a lot of waterfront properties and great houses, but I have two questions.
1.) How safe is it? (Since it's near Brentwood and Bay Shore)
2.) Which school district? (Bay Shore or West Islip)

Bay Shore Schools are OK.

It's Bay Shore schools.
I'm not sure it's as safe as GC with Hamepstead (speaking as a GC resident) - we have our own village police plus everyone keeps an eye out.
More like Huntington with the bad areas of Huntington Station.

.
.
Among other things, the Census Bureau's online address search function lists in which school district an address is located.

Brightwaters is plenty $afe for the $ame rea$on as GC....its the old money, not the Village cops ; )
(It may be nicer too, Im a sucker those canal front mini mansions but GC has really awesome schools)
I think Huntington/HStation is a lousy comparison, Id much rather have Bay Shore as a neighbor than Huntington Station.
Bay Shore has come a long long way of late and West Bay Shore is beautiful.

For those who may not be familiar with Brightwaters
You should be aware that not all places with a "Brightwaters, NY 11718" mailing address are in the Village of Brightwaters.
For those who may not be familiar with Brightwaters:
Brightwaters is a village (incorporated in 1916) in the southwest section of the Town of Islip, Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Brightwaters in the Town of Islip is bordered on the north and the east by the Hamlet of Bay Shore; on the south by the Great South Bay and the Hamlet of West Bay Shore; and, on the west by the Hamlet of West Bay Shore and the Hamlet of West Islip.
The Village of Brightwaters has a different border than does the "Brightwaters, NY 11718" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Brightwaters, NY 11718" mailing address and not be in the Village of Brightwaters and a place can have other than a "Brightwaters, NY 11718" mailing address and be in the Village of Brightwaters): places that have a "Brightwaters, NY 11718" mailing address that are not in the Village of Brightwaters are in the Hamlet of Bay Shore; and, at the same time, there are places in the Village of Brightwaters with a "Bay Shore, NY 11706" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

I would buy there in a heartbeat. As Crooks stated alot of old money down there... It isnt losing any luster anytime soon. The "lakes" area is beautiful. And Bay Shore is turning itself around quite nicely.

bayshore used to be nice. I remember many years ago when they had small horse farms there. tons of italians there. every fourth of july, there were huge fireworks parties on every other block. now, theres just small pockets of the old families.
