I am confused on what liberal or progressive mean. I am catholic and lived in Great Neck for a while. That must be a diverse town since it is predominantly jewish. It must diverse and progressive.
Or wait...jews are white, and I am white so its not diverse or progressive.
Then again, I am italian, and they are Israeli or Persian, so it must be diverse diverse or progressive.
In the end, it all depends how you look at it. If you are a fiscally conservative black does that make you any different than a fiscally conservative white?
I am a fiscal conservative and social liberal. Where should I live?
Isn't by definition someone that is liberal or progressive someone that would be accepting of others differences??
A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government.
Thomas Jefferson

ADNY,
True. I've said it many times. The US is the only country that is so obsessed with categorizing people. We have to slot people into categories and then we punish ourselves if we don't meet this manufactured standard of "diversity".
Schools do it. Governments do it. Universities do it. Businesses do it. Ad agencies do it. It really makes us look silly. Many foreigners have noted to me that Americans try so hard to be "inclusive" that it just comes across as if we are faking it. Perhaps we are.

We are losing sight of the big picture. Truly silly as you say.

Perhaps you should get active in your community if you want the affordable parts of PW to improve and stay that way.

I have become my active in my community and that is why my opinion has changed. I realized that a lot of the predjudices I had were unfounded.
I have met black people at Harbor Homes (The projects) and I can tell you that very few of the people there are involved in any criminal activity. Many of them work in low wage jobs in Port like at Stop and Shop and many have family members that have lived in the area for decades. My wife went to school back in the 80's with the kids of the elderly black lady that babysits for us. These are not people just looking to rob you.
I also have had more exposure to the Hispanic community through my church and realized that majority of Hispanics in Port are not illegals. Sure there are problems with illegals on some streets and there has been some gang activity on a few select streets but this has decreased greatly with the increased police presence in the area.
The most positive thing I see about Port is that kids of all races hang out together. The Black and Hispanic kids skateboard alongside with the White kids. Young minority kids in Port seem to be more integrated into and familar with "white" culture. This I think is a positive sign for their future upward mobility.
In Port whether you a ultra-liberal lesbian couple or a staunch anti-abortion activist (I've met both here), you will find a home here. That is what the real world is like and that is what I want my kids to experience.

Interesting that a conservative knows more about what us secular progressive liberals believe in than we do.....

Interesting that a secular-progressive-liberal thinks that a libertarian is a conservative!

This OP wouldn't have even had to post to begin with if there weren't such a minority of divergent opinions, and such animosity towards such opinions. It is so heavily one-sided, that people with other opinions, like myself, are welcome in a short list of towns. If it were up to many of you, my family would stay in NJ--isn't that right? The thread here has served only to reinforce what I already knew. How very sad.

As far as Valley Stream and the 2000 election goes, Gore won the area (the village as well as North & South Valley Stream) 58.85-37.81. The village itself was the closest with Gore margin of victory being about 9 points there, he won by more than 3-1 (77-21) in S Valley Stream and by 35 points in N Valley Stream.
In the village Gore won 21 of the 27 precincts, he won 10 of the 11 precincts in North Valley Stream and all six in South Valley Stream
