It is impossible to be "past race" when we are living with the legacy of racial segregation and steering.

You now bordering on douchebaggery by hijacking the thread, all I said was Stony Brook is liberal(not integrated) per ops request.
Say what you will, fling poo and make your argument about race.
I was merely answering the question.

Are you referring to the Village of Farmingdale or to the several communities that are all or partly in the "Farmingdale, NY 11735" ZIP Code postal zone: the Hamlet of South Farmingdale and the Hamlet of Plainedge, as well as in the Hamlet of Old Bethpage in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County and the Hamlet of East Farmingdale and the Hamlet of Wyandanch in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County?

Ah, but if it's brought up, we're supposed to say that that's all in the past and it doesn't reflect Garden City today.

What about New Hyde Park? Is there anyone out there with some info on what it's like to live in that town? I know about commute. Is there a main street? White or blue collar or mix of both?

It depends on what YOU mean by "New Hyde Park"?
The "New Hyde Park, NY 11040" ZIP Code postal zone is much larger than the Village of New Hyde Park; and, thus, the majority of places that have a "New Hyde Park, NY 11040" mailing address (3,339 acres) are not in the Village of New Hyde Park (531 acres).
Places that have a "New Hyde Park, NY 11040" mailing address that are not in the Village of New Hyde Park are in the Village of Lake Success, the Hamlet of Manhasset, the Village of North Hills, the Hamlet of Manhasset Hills, the Hamlet of North New Hyde Park, the Hamlet of Herricks and the Hamlet of Garden City Park.

Southern portions of the Great Neck area (Walter, before you jump I'm talking about the entire vicinity and not just the village itself) and the Roslyn area and East Hills are very liberal. Jericho, Woodbury, Syosset, and Plainview (basically the areas gerrymandered out of King's district and into Israel's district) are all fairly liberal. Other liberal areas though much less diverse are southern portions of Bellmore and Merrick.

I view East Hills as more conservative than the rest of Roslyn. I saw alot of soccer mom types driving SUV's with McCain stickers on them last year. East Hills is probably one of the least diverse neighborhoods after Garden City. Also the only community on LI to restrict a park to it's residents only very strictly (other than GC which really doesn't have large parks).
I think the OP should stay in NJ. Unfortunately I dont think a diverse, liberal, and safe community even exists on LI. They do in NJ, but Long Island is much more segregated. You have lily white areas like Garden City, East Hills, Plainview, etc, but most of the non-white population lives in ghettos. There's a few exceptions to this, such as part of Westbury north of the parkway but in Westbury USFD that has a large black upper middle class population, but in general LI is much more segregated. In some ways I think it has gotten more segregated over the years, as many commuties get whiter and richer while other communities suffer from steering, this is happening alot with the illegal immigrants getting steered into sections of Westbury, Hempstead, Freeport, etc.
Your quality of life will be better remaining in NJ, you're not that far from Long Island so you can always visit. The closest communities to what you're describing would be Westbury or Hicksville in Nassau (portions of town tho are overrun with illegals) and Stony Brook/Setauket area in Suffolk. The latter is pricier though and further from the city.

NHP is getting more diverse but there's still a large conservative community there. Why not look at Queens? Places like Bayside, Fresh Meadows, Forest Hills. Queens is great because you're never far from any ethnicity. Plus public transportation is very good there compared to Nassau.
