Alexis..I'm not sure why you have so much animosity towards GC. I'd invite you to come shop here or have a nice dinner on Franklin Ave. It's really not so bad. Contrary to your implications, we don't have the KKK here.
Apparently Garden City residents Cable boxes are stuck on FOX News.

It's not about whether people in all-white towns are members of the KKK. I daresay most aren't. But if you are a white person living in an almost entirely white town, you don't have the same firsthand experience of race as someone who is not white or lives in an integrated community. Sure, you hear the stories about GCPD or what happens in the parks; but that's excused as working to keep the community safe for the residents.

Someone in that position saying that what we need to do is get past race is naive. I've seen what happens when a white person tries to say it to someone of another race, and by and large, the outcome is bad. Very bad.

This thread probably belongs in another forum at this point. If you want to feel really smart (liberal or conservative) spend some time in the politics area of city-data....whoa boy.

Jrprofess, I appreciate your trying to steer the thread back towards home. At the same time, I do feel these issues are so important, and it is nice to see so much passion out there!

So, I am still thinking Valley Stream, maybe Port Washington. Beyond that I am just stuck! The Huntington area seems OK, maybe in Harborfields SD, but I'm wondering if it is a bit far out for us. Is there any other town I might be missing within Nassau or on the Nassau/Suffolk border.

I'd love to see the recent voting records (particularly in our presidential election) for Valley Stream out of curiousity.

PW is nice, but be very particular about what area you look in Port Washington. It wouldn't do to find what you think is an "affordable" house and then once you move in realize it was affordable because it's on the same block with illegal boarding houses overfilled with illegal alien men and gangbangers. Unfortunately, the areas of PW where you are guaranteed not to have this are quite expensive, but if you have a lot of money to spend on a house, go for one of those areas. Talk to the Precinct in Port Washington about what they are doing regarding illegal aliens and street gangs. There have been some areas chock full of them in PW, but a poster on this board says the cops are cracking down on them and have made progress. So find out what's happening now.

VS does not have illegal alien flophouses and gangs because the Village cracks down on overcrowding. I never see graffiti (a surefire sign of the presence of gangbangers, they eat, sleep and breathe graffiti). I have asked people on here to let me know if they see any graffiti in VS and tell me where it is so I can raise hell with Village Hall and nobody has yet. I have several distractors that do not like VS because "it's changed" (code for more minorities) and they would be thrilled to tell me this, I assure you.

I voted for Obama. Frankly, not because I knew so much about him, but more because I knew that McCain would totally spell disaster for our country ... a continuation of the reign of Bush II with a possibly crazy person at the helm. I could tell Obama had a brain and was a respectable person and not a lunatic, so he was the best candidate (who had a chance of winning) in that race. I am the type of person who does not just follow any party line. I evaluate each candidate instead of pull all the levers for the party I consider myself affiliated with.

As for Huntington, stay out of Huntington Station is my only advice. Here is my opinion on why:

With all due respect, how come the conservatives and republicans don't seem concerned about the trillions we continue to spend on war, particularly in Iraq?

Is it better to use all that money to kill people rather than make sure all Americans have healthcare?

PS: I like Garden City in a lot of ways and so do most LI'ers.

PPS: GC is not a KKK stronghold and nobody said it was.

Have you thought about Long Beach in Nassau?

Right after the election, Newsday put out a whole big map and a community by community listing in regards to the results.

I'm not sure where you got that info from. I remember Newsday's map had West Islip being rather strong for McCain, but not that strong. I delved into precinct data, McCain did win West Islip easily, but not 70%, he won 58.86-40.20. And the GOP does have a rather strong registration advantage, its not 50/50 (will post that data when I have more time to go through it)

Stony Brook's loss will be the other areas gain

Should you change your tune on Stony Brook, please feel free to DM me. I live here and love it, but wouldn't want to do the NYC commute from here
