Should you change your tune on Stony Brook, please feel free to DM me. I live here and love it, but wouldn't want to do the NYC commute from here

I wouldn't do the Melville commute from there, never mind NYC. 347 is DE PITZ. I haven't lived over there for 10 years, and I every time I go back, my wife and I remind ourselves why we aren't going to look East of the 347/25 crossover.
As to the rest of the disucssion, the term "diversity" diverges from the dictionary definition quite often..my experience on this board is that a lot of people looking for "diversity" are really minorities looking for people like themselves..not that I can blame them for wanting to be around some people like them, but that's not what diversity means.

Oh my goodness! You mean we may be encouraging a minority family to move to LI? Uh, then forget what I said, OP, there are NO liberal and progressive towns on LI. Stay in Jersey!

So, I am still thinking Valley Stream, maybe Port Washington. Beyond that I am just stuck! The Huntington area seems OK, maybe in Harborfields SD, but I'm wondering if it is a bit far out for us. Is there any other town I might be missing within Nassau or on the Nassau/Suffolk border.
I'd love to see the recent voting records (particularly in our presidential election) for Valley Stream out of curiousity.

I know Valley Stream went rather heavily for Obama, but can't find the current data. I have the precinct level results, for Nassau but do not know the breakdown of which precincts are currently in Valley Stream, as the info I have is based off 2000, and some areas including Valley Stream changed precinct numbers. I should be able to get you the 2000 results if you would like

I think Valley Stream may fit the bill for you.

It's interesting that just because you are looking for diversity (whether it is across race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.), some immediately assume you are the minority looking for others like yourself. If that is what I was looking for, then I would have posted "I am looking for an (insert race, ethnicity) town."
But I digress...Smash255, it's kind of you to offer the voter data from 2000. I'd love to see it. Many thanks.

Secular-progressives define diversity by what you look like and not by what you believe, regardless of your race, religion*, sexual orientation, etc.
* And, not too religious, please.

I would have to respectfully, and wholeheartedly, disagree.

In your own words, from your initial post that began this thread," ... are there towns in LI that are diverse in these respects but also liberal or progressive or, at least, democrat?"
Like almost all secular-progressive-liberals, you are seeking physical and lifestyle diversity but no diversity in opinion.

Not true. Even in towns with a progressive bent, like the one I live in, there is a vocal conservative population, and many other diverging opinions, all welcome and respected. However it is true, as I said previously, that I feel comfortable that my child will be raised among other children whose parents share similar values.
