Hauppauge Schools
We just put a bid on a house in Smithtown but it's in the Hauppauge school district. I've heard only good things about the district so far. I've checked the test scores and they seem pretty good but someone recently mentioned that they think part of Central Islip is zoned for Hauppauge schools. I know that CI is not the best area and I was wondering if anyone knows if this is true. I'd also love to hear all thoughts/opinions on the district. Thanks!

CI high school is in the northern part of CI so i highly doubt any part of CI would go to happaugue schools... and even if it was, whats the big deal if the district has good ratings/scores??

For those who may not be familiar with Hauppauge

jimlisa1020, first, congratulations on knowing that buyers bid, sellers offer.
Second, from your brief description, I'm guessing that your house may be in the part of the Hamlet of Hauppauge that has a "Smithtown, NY 11787" mailing address.
You can find out in which community (city, village or CDP) that house is actually located, which is oftentimes different from the community named in that house's mailing address, by using the Census Bureau's online address search function. (CDP or Census Designated Place is the Census Bureau equivalent for a hamlet in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.)
For those who may not be familiar with Hauppauge:
Hauppauge is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) partly in the south part of the Town of Smithtown and partly in the north part of the Town of Islip, in the west part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Hauppauge partly in the Town of Smithtown and partly in the Town of Islip is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Smithtown and the Hamlet of Nesconset in the Town of Smithtown; on the east by the Hamlet of Ronkonkoma and the Village of Islandia in the Town of Islip; on the south by the Village of Islandia and the Hamlet of Central Islip in the Town of Islip; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Commack in the Town of Smithtown.
The Hamlet of Hauppauge has a different border than does the "Hauppauge, NY 11788" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Hauppauge, NY 11788" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Hauppauge and a place can have other than a "Hauppauge, NY 11788" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Hauppauge): places that have a "Hauppauge, NY 11788" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Hauppauge are in the Hamlet of Smithtown and the Village of Islandia; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Hauppauge with a "Smithtown, NY 11787" and "Central Islip, NY 11722" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

Yes, the Village of Islandia can be geographically very confusing because Islandia is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the village name in their mailing address, and parts of Islandia have a "Central Islip, NY 11722 and 11749" mailing address, and other parts of Islandia have a "Hauppauge, NY 11788 and 11760" mailing address.
For those who may not be familiar with Islandia:
Islandia is a village (incorporated in 1985) in the north-central section of the Town of Islip, in the southwest part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Islandia in the Town of Islip is bordered on the north by Hamlet of Hauppauge; on the east by the Hamlet of Ronkonkoma; on the south by the Hamlet of Ronkonkoma and the Hamlet of Central Islip; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Central Islip and the Hamlet of Hauppauge.

Hauppauge is a better district then smithtown. It's "smithtown" that has the spotty areas, because it is so big.

I'd have no problem buying a house in Smithtown or Hauppague schools. Smithown has higher taxes.
The only issue you'll deal with in these schools is the same prescription drug-gateway to heroin issue that you can deal with at any high school on LI. They even had a public meeting about it a few months ago in Smithtown. Check your kids things for pills every once-in-awhile.

As long as your child has no need for special services such as (speech, physical therapy etc) then Hauppauge schools are fine.
We lived in Hauppauge for 9 yrs and recently moved due to the problems were having with the schools in regards to special services needed for our child.
There are some issues with the Middle school, old and outdated but they are making improvements.

Having house-hunted in Hauppauge before buying in Smithtown (we were fine with either) I think the area others refer to as CI is technically still Hauppauge but on the fringe of CI: Just south of the expressway as you come down Rte 111. Based on the address of a home I looked at, it was still technically Hauppauge. Islandia is a curious area, as the actual area of "Islandia" is a cover for CI, that goes to CI schools. The only part that appears to be a part of that "village" and goes to Hauppauge schools is technically in Hauppauge, right along Old Nicholls Rd., on the west side. The developers continue to shoehorn in large new homes to this parcel of land that I am sure they had re-zoned for the district, if it was not already in it...otherwise they could not charge their ridiculous prices.
To the OP, both Smithtown and Hauppauge are fine choices. Best of luck in your search.
