While parts of the Hamlet of East Massapequa have a "Massapequa Park, NY 11762" mailing address, as well as a "Massapequa, NY 11758" mailing address, no part of the Village of Massapequa Park is in the Hamlet of East Massapequa.

For the NYS definition of county, city, town, village, hamlet, postal zone:

East Massapequa is generally considered the area west of Carmans Road going towards Amityville (within the Amityville school district). This area has a completely different demographic compared to the rest of Massapequa, and is largely comprised of black households.
I did mean east of Carmens, btw.

Doesn't matter, they are adding the 11762 areas and other adjoining neighborhoods that are in the Massapequa school district and lumping them into "East Massapequa".

Just took a look at the Census site. All of the area that is considered East Massapequa (ie east of Carmens road) falls within the 5220 Census district so the stats were pretty easy to find.

44.48% White
33.03% Black
15.84% Hispanic
3.10% Asian
2.91% Mixed

The white population tends to be a bit older

18+
49.37% White
30.40% Black
14.48% Hispanic
3.02% Asian
2.23% Mixed

under 18
41.31% Black
29.14% White
20.08% Hispanic
5.04% Mixed
3.36% Asian
Seems pretty much right.

It's the part of the "Massapequa Park, NY 11762" postal zone that is outside of the Village of Massapequa Park, as well as the part of the "Manhasset, NY 11758" postal zone that is outside of the Hamlet of Massapequa.

Bear in mind, concomittent with the 1990 federal census, it was the Hamlet of West Amityville (the area east of Carman's Road that had been in the "Amityville, NY 11701" postal zone) that was absorbed into the Hamlet of East Massapequa, not vice versa.

A bit of a typo there, I'm sure you mean Massapequa not Manhasset, but you are right. The area where I live is in the Mass Pk postal code & Massapequa S.D, is generally thought of as Massapequa park, but just because its generally thought of being that doesn't make it so. Its actually East Massapequa.

The school district breakdown of East Massapequa is probably about 59% Massapequa, 33% Amityville, 8% Farmingdale. Massapequa High School is technically in East Massapequa as is the Nassau Shores.

For some reason, most people seem to have a really hard time understanding this. I get the impression that geographic areas are thought of more in socioeconomic terms than where their actual borders lay. I bet a lot of your neighbors would be pretty offended if you told them they lived in East Massapequa.

Possibly, however from an economic standpoint the area thought of as East Massapequa is very much middle class. IIRC pretty much around the incomes of Plainedge, Levittown and Farmingale. Granted a bit lower than my area, but from an economic stand point I would say my area is closer to East Massapequa (East of Carmens) then it is to the Nassau Shores, Bar Harbor, etc

The reason that geographic illiteracy is so widespread is the mistaken very strong belief, fostered almost universally by the print and electronic media, that a place is located in the community whose name is in that place's mailing address.
