You can definitely do better elsewhere.

What's the deal with MS-13 in MINEOLA? Do you also have an illegal alien problem?
Voted themselves a 61% raise, eh? I thought a "trustee" was supposed to be trustworthy to the people s/he is serving.
I am going to be on a cleaning spree this election day and voting against ALL incumbents. I hope everyone else joins me. The more the merrier. And if the next batch of politicians don't deliver anything except graft, perks and freebies into their own pockets I will vote against them too. Someday we may find politicians worthy of voting for as incumbents.

I lived in Mineola for a year and never heard of any gang activity. I used to walk back from the train station at mid-night and it was safe.

What year was that?
I've never heard of it either until now.

I was a Mineola resident for 19 years. I lived there from age 7 through 26 and just moved to Rockville Centre a month ago, so here it is from my perpsective.
In some aspects, there isn't a town that is much more convenient than Mineola. There are a ton of supermarkets, 3 or 4 movie theaters within reasonable driving distance, the biggest mall in NY right next door, and all the chain restaurants along Old Country Road. Every major bank has a branch nearby, and the LIRR parking for commuters is fairly good. $55 per year for residents, and you can find a spot in the resident parking garage after 8am.
Schools... they're okay... not the greatest, but it's okay. I don't know how else to describe it. It's far from the worst, but it's nowhere near the elite. Sports is middle of the road as well. Boys soccer does well. Football generally doesn't. Baseball team was competitive but we never went beyond the 2nd round of playoffs. My class did not send anyone to Ivy schools, not to say that no one did well and went to elite schools, but I know a lot of people use that as a barometer. I think one kid two years younger than me went to Harvard, but those are far and few in between, unlike other districts that have a few every year. The HS has probably changed since I've been there though. When I graduated, the principal left the district for another one, and the assistant principal retired, so a new administration was brought in where things could've changed that I didn't experience.
Most sections and areas are safe and nice to live in as well. I live in the eastern section, near Wilson Park and Sheridan bowling alley. For curb and street appeal, the tudor houses off Old Country Road, and the western section by Jackson Ave. school and Chaminade are probaby the best bet, along with the area west of Mineola Blvd, north of Jericho and south of Hillside. I would avoid purchasing in the area between Roslyn Road and Willis Ave.
There's nothing wrong with living or growing up in Mineola. If you're looking for better education or higher home values relative to other towns on LI though, then you're likely better off not in Mineola. Honestly, that's why I didn't consider looking for a house there.

Ditto! All I know is there is a big Protugese/Brazilian population, but never heard of any MS-13 or other issues...the Willis Ave area around Jericho Tpke does look a tad-bit run down, but again...never heard of anything to be worried about!

Don't forget that when you live in Queens you pay a pretty hefty NYC income tax. When you add that to the property taxes, it can approach the property taxes in LI.

Too many Illegal rentals
I lived in Mineola for 8 years and finally moved in 2002 because i was sick of the rental houses near me that housed too many people. Mineola will not crack down on this so be careful where you move to in Mineola. And yes, there was definitely some talk about MS-13 in certain areas of the village, but maybe things are better now. I have relatives who still live in Mineola and seem to be happy there. They also don't live near a rental house.
