Tell me all about Mineola!
I'm still looking to move to LI, and have noticed that Mineola's housing prices are more affordable than other parts of LI. The property taxes seem lower as well.
I'd love to hear from those who know Mineola well-tell me what you think of this area, the good, the bad, and everything in between! Thanks!

For those who may not be familiar with Mineola
The Village of Mineola is in three different school districts: most of the village is in the Mineola Union Free School District, while the northeastern part of the village is in the East Williston Union Free School District and the southeastern part of the Village is in the Carle Place Union Free School District.
For those who may not be familiar with Mineola:
Mineola is a village (incorporated in 1906) in the south-central part of the Town of North Hempstead, in the west part of Nassau County, along the North Hempstead/Hempstead town line.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Mineola in the Town of North Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Herricks, The Village of Williston Park, the Village of East Williston and the Hamlet of Roslyn Heights; on the east by the Village of Old Westbury, the Village of Westbury and the Hamlet of Carle Place; on the south by the Village of Garden City in the Town of Hempstead (the North Hempstead/Hempstead town line); and on the west by the Hamlet of Garden City Park.
The Village of Mineola has a different border than does the "Mineola, NY 11501" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Mineola, NY 11501" mailing address and not be in the Village of Mineola and a place can be in the Village of Mineola and have other than a "Mineola, NY 11501" mailing address): places that have a "Mineola, NY 11501" mailing address that are not in the Village of Mineola are in the Village of Garden City in the Town of Hempstead; and, at the same time, there are places in the Village of Mineola with a "Williston Park, NY 11596" and "Carle Place, NY 11514" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

Good commute to Manhattan, traffic stinks, schools are in the slightly above average category. Crime and poverty are low, no real seedy areas....very dense, though. Jericho Turnpike (one of the main thoroughfares) is kind of run down and industrial looking. A lot of people on LI would point to Mineola as one of those areas that "has become like Queens", though personally I wouldn't mistake it for anything other than the first 1/4 mile or so of Hillside Avenue in Bellerose....if even that.
Off the beaten path(s), the majority of the residential neighborhoods were developed pre-WWII and have (IMO) a lot more charm than more recent LI developments, but also very narrow lots. Price range is anywhere from $350k-$800k, maybe a little more/less on both ends. There are also a decent number of rental/co-op buildings mixed in which is not common in most areas of Nassau.

Mineola is nice. It could be compared to some of the nicer sections of queens ( nothing wrong with that). The Mineola school district at the middle and high school level do not have great test scores, but the elementary schools look ok. The people are friendly, and it is one of the few places in Long Island where you can live in a quiet sub-urban house and walk to stores to get basic groceries etc. My doctors and lawyers are located in Mineola, so I go there often. The location is also very convenient, with the Mineola train station offering 35 min express trains to Penn, mega shopping on Old Country road just a short drive, and several nice restaurants within walking distance. The only negative I can think of is the traffic on major roads and the school district is not as highly rated as neighboring Herricks and Garden city.

I happen to like Mineola. Some Long Islanders will say it's like Queens because there are some apartment buildings there. big deal. The downtown near the train station appears to be going through a revival. It's one of those areas that is designated as a future "cool downtown" There are some great restaurants there. Try Mo's Cafe. Great Burritos!

as others have said, it's very congested but if you're working in the city you don't have to deal with that 5 days out of the week.

Mineola is a nice town.
It has a very large Portuguese and Brazilian population which I think gives it flavor. Some of those restaurants are fantastic. Barraida is a must if you love good Brazilian/Portuguese food.
You've got the hospital nearby, a great commute, some nice shops and its pretty central to the rest of Long Island. If your kid is bright enough, you also have Chaminade High right there which is an Ivy League feeder school.
All in all not a bad town.

Much better schools, less congestion, still 35 minutes to Midtown, still has good pizza, isn't actually anything like Queens, etc. etc.
Also, even though the taxes may be lower in NYC you're not gonna be able to find a decent sized single family detached home for under $600k unless it's in a really, really bad neighborhood.
