Thank you MollyMe. Only you answered my question. Some others, if they are from GC, answered as well in their own way. The scenario startled some people and somehow diverted the discussion.
But I am not Barack Obama, racial tension and big ugly houses in Queens, I am looking out for my 5-year old girl. What is a good environment for her? She is shy and timid; she would suffer in being a trailblazer.
I find comfort in what you said, coming from a school teacher. But I am still concerned, is everyone as nice as you? I am not so naive as to expect that, I am still curious.

Sixtwo, fortunately for you, Asians have established themselves as hardworking successful members of the community. This country is made up of many different peoples and some have not proven to be this way. Therefore they face some forms of discrimination and ostrization. The Asians are almost always the top of their classes and are recognized achievers in business and academics. I believe Asians have set the precedent for every other immigrating ethnic group to follow. Asians have also overcome tremendous discrimination, langauge barriers and clearly discernable physical features that distingiush them from others and they continue to succeed. I wish every other ethnic "minority" group could do that and stop blaming world history for their problems and making excuses for failures. You are welcome as my neighbor any day.

Jeez how cheesy. Do you want some crackers for that cheese?
I think it's dangerous when you start lumping people into such broad groups. Many Asian-Americans resent the whole "model minority," rhetoric. No one likes to be stereotyped and put into a box. I know because I've had discussions with quite a few people with Asian backgrounds about this. The concept of a "model minority," in itself is condescending and insulting, because it inherently assumes that non-white people are supposed to do be unproductive members of society.

What is the fascination with race and ethncity here..whats with wondering "what you are"..I cannot tell you how many times I Have been asked "what are you?"....and I feel like saying "A successful productive member of society..and YOU are?" Dont get me wrong, being an second generation here, I am in full favor of the theory "in this country, assimilate and learn the language>" I see my own culture that lives in a bubble and doesnt want to learn the customs of living here in the US and I honestly dont relate to that, because I am born brought up here and my own folks blended in very well.
But I do think, as a mother its not a bad thing to ask if there child will fit in the school if its a majority of one race...look we all want to fit in and get along. There is absolutely NO diversity in the schools we live in now...and I worry that if we do have schools like that....its not a representation of what the "real world is like".
As far as whether the asians care for the whites...I know that I welcome diversity...what I dont welcome is the non-productive members of society that ride on coat tails of others or the government. There is nothing wrong with an honest day of hard work and respecting others.
So, I actually take offense to that slight comment...Just my honest opinion.

Please, I bet if an African American family moved in right next door to you, you would just be overjoyed, wanting your children playing with theirs. I am totally in support of people of different races living around each other. My gripe is with these new immigrants (esp. Asians) rushing into white communities because they want to fit in. In California there are so many immigrants like yourself that no one thinks to care what you are. Every single Asian I have ever met and known is racist against blacks and many are racist against latinos as well. It almost seems like they are desperate to get in with whites, In my opinion whites might like this but we definitely don't give more respect for this kiss ass mentality, although it might inflate some peoples heads.

We are ALL racist towards some culture (skin color, nationality, etc) other than our own in some way. Even the whites, we can break it down to Irish, Italian, Polish, German, etc. Notice the pockets of all these groups throughout Queens and BKLYN, with their grocery stores, etc carrying their specialty items, with Saturday language schools for their children to continue learning their language and culture and carry that forward. The Polish esp dont want to lose that. Is that so wrong for them to want to be with each other? NO. Just as the Indians, Asians, black, etc want to be with their own "most" often (sure I cant speak for them all). If you dont feel like you fit in, then you dont move there. I would not want to move in a community where "I" was the minority, that is for sure, but I dont get "mad" that these communities exist and call them racists. Everyone likes their own type often.
and dont forget, there are some whites who dont want to live with other whites for what may seem to be stereotypical reasons (but very often is true for many) =.We all have our experiences and reasons for wanting what we do.
