dorothy, do you have the nebulizer at home? if you do (or don't) get the pediatrician to give you one and a prescription for albuterol and pulmicort. just to have it handy. my kids had the flu last year. we did go to our reg. ped. who then performed the flu test which came positive. i did not go to ER (I hope to God I don't have to ever again). in every state i have lived, i have been able to characterize my experience in ERs as following: go only if your life is hanging by a thread. it is a total disgrace for a country such as ours to have way below minimum acceptable care provided at these hospitals, who care more about to get your info how to foot you and the insurance with a big FAT bill then saving lives. Every time I have had to take my kids to ERs in the middle of the night our wait has been nothing short of 4-5 hours. THAT with infants in tow. wanna talk free healthcare? let's see how long our wait will get at our regular doctors. we will all turn to homeopathic medicine

Dont want to wait in the ER? Just put an INS uniform on. The whole waiting room will empty out.
My Uncle went to Brookhaven for Thyroid surgery and he didn't have any problems. I dont see what is wrong with that hospital. NUMC is much worse.
My family member went in at 9 pm with acute pain.... They let him writhe in pain for 4 hours.... he was literally whispering to us that he is going to pass out as he could not breathe. After 4 hours of suffering he started to recover (remember.... nobody has looked at him yet).... They come at 6 am and start doing all sorts of tests, CT scans, X-rays, echo and what not. They did not have a clue what was wrong. They admitted him and then he got sick. The people who would draw blood would be interns, and they would come to get his blood without telling us the results of the earlier tests.... it went on for 2 days, we saw the doctor once during that period. It was bad. We finally got him out against doctors orders.
NUMC has an excellent trauma and burn unit, too. I think it's the only burn unit on Long Island.
Actually Stony Brook has a really great Burn Unit too.
