Long Islanders are racist
I am so disgusted with the racist comments on this website from Long Islanders. I am an Asian American looking for a nice neighborhood to raise my family and all I hear is the negative, and yes racist, attitude towards anything but white or Jewish. My husband is Jewish and we see ourselves as traditional Americans who uphold good American values.
It's one thing to have a general stereotype in your mind, we cannot help that, but it's another to espouse it and indoctrinate others into your hatred and ignorance.
And you want to claim that you have such wonderful schools, what kind of children are you raising. Clones of the racist attitudes that you have?
Are you proud of the fact that many liberal, educated people view Long Islanders as simple (as in stupid), superficial, and supercilious.
Instead of persecuting newly arrived immigrants, and some are not even immigrants, why don't you reach out to them and acculturate them into your community. Why can't you ask them to appreciate the traditional values and aesthetics of classic Americana, yet at the same time accommodate some of their traditions. It doesn't have to be all one way or another.
And another thing, it isn't just Asians and Middle Eastern people ruining the landscapes of traditional neighborhoods, it's all people who just dont' care to take care of their communities. And again, alot of that has to do with, that there truly aren't communities. Look at the attitudes on this board. Just awful. We have just become a nation that cares only of our own wants, no one looks to help out the community anymore and looks at our actions in longterm consequences.
Long Islanders are notorious for their selfishness, and pushy moms and dads that raise more selfish children. With oversized wallets, competition for top schools, where is the community being developed. So you wonder why, people of any descent come into Long Island only for the moment?
I'm ashamed of myself of momentarily thinking that we should consider living in Long Island. It would be a disgrace to call myself an American.

Sukie, Don't step down to that level it only proves to be as ignorant as those that you critisize. There are racist people but they don't reflect the attitude of all or most Long Islanders. Just as the acts of some Asians don't represent all Asians. It is that ignorance that causes these problems. Please read my post on the Garden City topic. Walk tall and be proud, please don't stupe to this level.

Glen NY,
You're right. I apoligize for being so hasty. I've met some wonderful people from Long Island. However, they did look at me funny first and asked those politically incorrect questions. Like I tell my students, you just ignore stupidity, it will take care of itself in the end.
I have faced racism all my life, and I am the nicest person you could meet with the most traditonal American values. And I just do not want my children to go through what I went through.
It's just so sad that I have to worry about racism at all.
Is there no community that worries about something else besides what color the person is who moves in next door?

Sukie, It is probably one of the hardest things in the world, to watch your children endure some of the pains and hardships of this world. I advise you to teach them to be above it, find the good in people and not to ever let it take them down. They will be accepted if they are taught to believe that. Good Luck, there are some great areas in Long Island for all people.

Well, I bet if you go into Flushing, they don't want whiteys moving in. Go into Bellerose, and the Asian Indians don't want the same. Same when you go into black or Hispanic neighborhoods.
I just don't understand the infatuation with this rose colored view of racial diversity. Tell me, what are the benefits? I would seriously like to know.
People today just speak blindly because the liberal media tells them that's ow it should be. Please, if you watch enough TV and movies, you would think that everyone in America has one white, one black, and one asian friend. That's just not the real world.
I lived in a complex of 27 2 family houses. 22 we owned by Asians. I was virtually the only person to say hi to people, shovel snow for others, try to be a neighbor. These people would walk by like I was not there, but they would surely talk to the many familes that lived in their house. When i sold my house, people came out of the wood work...bluntly asking how much I sold it for, how I sold it, and to who...Korean, Chinese? Please, the Koreans looked down at the Chinese and the Chinese didn't like the Koreans. And you're going to complain about me not wanting LI to turn into Chinatown. Give me a break.
No one cares that Little Italy is no more, b/c Chinatown took over. Let's see the uproar when the yuppies buy up some shiny new condos in Chinatown b/c it's next to too many "hip" areas. I'm almost certain someone will pull out some affordable housing stuff to keep as many Asians in the area as possible.
It goes both ways, and it always has. You think people would like it if I brought 1 million Americans into China, and stared putting up diners and burger joints and having nothing but English signs? I doubt that would over well.
I'm finished ranting, too. I hope you and your husband find a nice place to live, but you can't possibly think that just b/c you are Asian and married a white man that all people should share the same views.

That's putting a positive spin. I'm not naive. I didn't marry someone white to have anyone share my views. You have some serious issues with Asians. But what you did for other neighbors is the same thing I do for all my neighbors, and no one cares here either, and I live in "white" neighborhood.

I think the problem stemmed from that Asians in Garden City thread. Someone posted a simple question about whether an asian person would feel comfortable in a predominately white LI neighborhood. Unfortunately, one of the more noticeable racists on here took this as an opportunity to go on a rant about neighborhoods with heavy asian populations. I think this should serve as a reminder for everyone including myself to stick to the topic.

Don't take it too personal sukie.
I think GCGuy has a point, and the racism works both ways. Asians can be very racist as well...
I recommend watching 'Avenue Q' one day...and I am certain you will find the song 'Everyone's a Little Bit Racist' somewhat enlightening.

Well, I know in my part, I am not racist. I do hate hypocrites however. I lived all over this country and can tell you that a majority of asians are more racist than any group I have ever seen. Asian females are in a frenzy it seems to get with white men. I believe this is true because many asian women want to fit in and have children that look more cute and white (like a novelty). I don't need you or anyone else to tell me these observations are false because I see it right in front of me all the time. I remember being in a casino once and there was this black guy with an asian female (somewhat rare, esp in California) and then saw this white guy with an asian female walk buy and heard the guy get angry with his girfriend, whatever, and say "I thought you told me that Asians won't go out with homies", she then reacted by saying, "This is very rare, we don't like blacks, come on baby please....". WTF is that?
