1963 1963 1963 1963 1963

Was the year that marked Hempstead Villages demise! The facilities of the older stores were too small to accomdate growing consumer demand of the population and the stores were unable to stock all of these new consumer goods mass produced at the end of WWII!

As a result of this situation in 1963 the department stores closed down and pulled out on mass exodus! Some moved to Franklyn ave. in Garden City! Some stores moved to the malls where there was more room to stock and display the merchandice and accomodate new parking facilities for the abundance of automobiles. Hempstead as well as Jamaica (in 1966)could no longer handle traffic congestion and air pollution!

This movement created a pocket or empty void which left buildings storefronts as well as homes vacant. There was no longer a raison'det-re for operating a business or living in the village of Hempstead!

Partly because of the Civil Rights movement and the immigration act of 1965 the non-white population living in nearby Roosevelt now had an opportunity to expand. In 1960 Hempstead, Roosevelt and Freeport all together had only a 2 to 3,000 thousand Blacks. By 1970 the non-white population of these communites had grow to well over 60,000 non-whites.

In 1960 Roosevelt was a mostly White middle class community. Blacks lived in the south Roosevelt while Whites lived North Roosevelt! With respect to schools Roosevelt had no school district of its own! As a result South Roosevelt was part of the Hempstead school district while North Roosevelt was part of the Freeport school district! The students from Northern Roosevelt (mostly white) and the students from southern Roosevelt (mostly Black) had to crosstown on way to their respective school districts.

In 1964 court ordered school intergration gave Roosevelt its own school district which was mostly non-white. Between 1964 and 1967 a mass exodus of Whites left the village of Roosevelt and its school district all Black while at the sametime lead to White flight from Freeport Village and its school district as well!

After 1960 Black students conjested the Hempstead school district. Up untill 1963 the Racial makeup of the Hempstead school district was about 90 to 95% white. Between 1964 and 1971 the racial makeup of Hempstead schools changed to about 50-50% mixed race. Then after 1971 it switched to what it is today!

Huh?

Are you suggesting that the Roosevelt Union Free School District had no school buildings of its own and paid to send the students in its district to other school districts?

Roosevelt is a hamlet, not a self-governing village, governed on an at-large basis by the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County.
