Floral Park, New Hyde Park, West Hempstead, I would say.
I guess you're at Hofstra or NCC?

How about Dix hills or Huntington? Both have good schools and should be in the 40Min range to get to work. It may be a bit hard to find a home in your price range but not impossable.

I agree about Dix Hills, Deer Park even, or Huntington. Maybe even Albertson or NHP, but I think they may be out of your price range. As for Floral Park, the Nassau County side is not very diverse at all, only the Queens side has more diversity if that is what you are looking for.

on the queens side you will not find very much in your price range unless you are willing to forget a home and buy a condo or co-op. In that case you should look in Little Neck or Bayside for affordable co-ops with good schools and not too far from work.

Garden City South, northern Franklin Square (School District 17) you'd get a wideline cape 3-4 bedrooms 2 baths in the 400's taxes between 7 and 8K. Low crime, good schools, moderate housing/taxes for LI, and 10 to 15 minute commute to Hempstead.

I REALLY appreciate all of this help. 8 or 9 possible communities-this is what we are looking for, and thanks again for the info. If there's more bring it on!
Regards,
Jim

Great Neck to Hempstead? A beastly commute. Stay central or south shore to narrow things down a bit.

Southern Franklin Square, North Valley Stream (school district 13) is more diverse, but still with very good schools, and still 10 minutes away from Hempstead. You could find some Morton ranches in the 400's in the area. West Hempstead is also more diverse, with good schools and you could find a nice home in the area in the $400's. 5 minutes to Hempstead.

This is a great suggestion. I second that. My cousin just bought there (400s). He is white, his wife is Asian, they neighbors are very mixed, black, asian, etc.
I would highly recommend this area as diverse for sure.
