My ancestors in Italy were enslaved, exploited, and pillaged by the French, Spanish, and Austro-Hungarian invaders prior to the Italian unification in the 1860's.
It was horrible let me tell you. Southern Italy is still suffering to this day because of these historical disadvantages. Spain, Austria, and France owe me reparations!!
Using historical events as a political weapon in the present day is the wrong way to go about things in my opinion. Trying to foster a victim mentality serves no real general good for society. All it does is foster division as people divide themselves in clans, all espousing different stories of how they were victimized.
I meet people all the time of different races and religions who refuse to make excuses for themselves. They refuse to live in the past, and instead strive to fight through adversity. It is those people who will unite this country someday, certainly not the race baiters out there.

You're Southern Italian too? What part are you from? My grandparents were both born in San Marco La Catola, a small mountain town an hour or two away from Foggia.

We aren't far from Foggia. My parents are from a small town in La Provincia di Avellino. It's pretty much in the Apennine Mountains between Napoli and Bari.

May as well get this thread locked for good!
One of the biggest problems with our lack of nationalistic pride is everyone seems to be something first, then "American"
African American
Hispanic American
Jewish American
Irish American
Etc.
And it extends to other areas too, like Homosexuals and women, for example.
The problem with groups like this is they tend to put their needs first, and ignore the "America" part. Women are in tune to issues that effect women, first and foremost. Same can be said for Jews...and blacks...and Hispanics, etc.
I remember when that rapper dude Eminen did that song with Elton John and "Homosexuals" were outraged because Eminem was labeled "Anti Homosexual" from his past lyrical content. Imagine that. Elton John can't perform a song with another artist because his gay peers will hold it against him? I think it's unreasonable to expect Elton John to think of what gays will think of him before he makes a decision that really only effects him.
This type of thing happens to all of these groups.
I'm American, nothing more, nothing less.

My Husband is Jewish and in casual conversation people have made comments to him like "Watch out for those freaking Jews out on the bay" (I guess they don't realize he is Jewish!). It kind of makes me not want to live here... and I didn't really expect it on LI.
I know it can be like that anywhere, but I've lived all over the Tri-State area and have never seen such an outward display since living in Lindenhurst.

Tell your neighbors my mom considered Lindenhurst one of the epitomes of white trash towns on Long Island. (So there! Take that racists!)
Just curious, but how is the whole Satanist thing going for you on LI?

I agree with you completely. If I call myself Italian, I'm referring to my heritage, not the country I live in or pledge allegiance to. This is why I never call myself an "Italian-American"; saying such things is unpatriotic and disrespectful.

1968. They immigrated to Western PA actually. I still have a ton of family back in Italy, so I go back pretty often. Being first generation, you kind of get caught between two worlds. There are things I love and hate about the US and Italy. If only I could combine the good things all in one place

I'm not really a Satanist, I just have that there because I'm sick of people telling me they'll pray for me or for God to bless me.
I live S of Montauk and liked Lindy when I first moved here, and the town itself has a lot of potential... but there is a lot of "white trash" almost redneck type element here, and I found that to be kind of a culture shock.

My grandparents immigrated to Springfield Massachusetts in 1959/1960. Like you, I have a lot of family still in Italy, and also other countries. Because of immigration quotas, some of my family moved to the UK because they couldn't come here. I'm second generation, but my father says the same things you do about being caught between two totally different worlds.
