Lipa is horrible. We live in a small apartment in Middle Island and our bill came out to 400 dollars. When I called LIPA they said that "it may be because of a pool or something"... yea right.

Large 4 bedroom, 2.5 baths, 5 people (3 teenagers), 2600 square foot house, central air (only used on the hottest days), oil heat, electric cooking, electric clothes drying = 180 per month on balanced billing.
Keeping your electric bills low is easy - install the compact flourescents, keep the air conditioners for only the hottest most humid days, install a whole house fan (used virtually every summer day except when central air is on), and get everyone to shut the lights when they leave the room.

My bills average between 150 a month to 250 in the winter. I have an all electric house - electric heat, electric hot water, electric stove, electric dryer.... I supplement the electric heat with my awesome pellet stove. I keep the electric heat at 50 in most rooms, 66 in the room where my birds are (with the doors shut) and I turn it off in rooms that do not have walls with water pipes in/near them. I have a small house, 1200 sq feet and live alone. I have CFLs, turn off my tv and it's components with a power strip when I'm not using it and don't have central air or air conditioners in the summer - fans only. I don't know what else to do to lower my bill, and it's only going up. Long Island is not single income household friendly at all!

Has anyone changed to one of these deregulated natural gas providers? If so, would you recommend the the service?

LIPA offers rebates of as much as $35,000 and the tax credits chop off a huge amount of your costs. My electric bill is 1/4 of what it originally was.

We avg $160 a month for a family of 5. (pellet stove/oil for heat, LP stove) The biggest power suck is the electric HW heater. We had 4 people stay over for a week...and the incresed showers and HW usage added $100 bucks to this months bill. Absolutely nuts.

Electric Rates in New York State
New York State has the third highest residential electric rates in the United States; only Connecticut and Hawaii have higher rates. New York is 19.48 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh), Connecticut is 20.24, and Hawaii is 36.94 cents per kWh.
The average retail price of electricity for the entire country in September 2008 was 10.31 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh).
Rates in New York State are almost twice the national average.
