I have a 3 bedroom house in Centereach and pay $200.00 for two months ($100 a month). Much cheaper than paying Con Edison's bill in the city.

Two of us living in a Levitt and we had ac on all summer. We do conserve and lowered our monthly budget to 180.00 We drop off laundry off to be done so save on washer/dryer..bought newer more efficient stove and dishwasher..but we aren't paying Keyspan, no gas here. We pay 275.00 for oil and 180.00 for electric..locked in at a high rate for oil

I don't even know what I pay anymore. I stopped opening the bills when I could no longer keep up with them, even on the "budget" plan. I just wait until they leave the little yellow tag on my door threatening to turn me off. I then scrounge up 2 or 3 hundred bucks, pay them that, go on yet another "budget" plan, and repeat same process every 2 or 3 months.
I'd say my total arrears has to be over a grand by now.
It never gets any lower than that, no matter how much I pay them, I just can't keep up with it anymore. I have 3/4 bedroom cape. Electric stove/dryer.
Last time I looked at a bill it was somewhere around $200 a month.
I think I stopped looking at the bills in the summer. I got one for July or August with AC's and it was like $400. I just threw my hands up in the air and said screw it.
We have all CF bulbs. I follow the kids around and turn everything off behind them.
We really do the best we can to keep the bill to a minimum, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. It's kinda funny that I've now turned into my old man, kicking and screaming about the LIPA bill, turning off lights, tv's etc...Ha!
A friend of mine told me something about LIPA pulling a scam with the billing, and
I can't quite remember exactly what it was, but it was something about charging more per "therm" or something like that on the backend. I can't remember exactly what he said, but we were talking about how we switched to all CF bulbs, EnergyStar appliances, and didn't notice a damn difference in the bill. And he said something along the lines of them charging a different "per therm" cost against kilowatt use or something to keep the bill high, or at least relative, so that no matter what you do, the bill wont drop dramatically.
Something like that, if anyone knows about this let me know, whether it's true or not, and exactly what it is. My friend left NY, I lost contact with him so I can't pick his brain about it again.

When I first moved into this house back in '02 the LIPA (or lilco back then?) bill was consistently $60. I know there's always inflation of prices over the years but a few years back it suddenly grew to $90 and now $130-ish per month. I thought we were bad (mostly because we started at half this cost)... but seeing some of you guys... wow.
Though of course our house has terrible insulation and we use up $500 worth of oil in the tank every 2 months in the winter. Good thing winter is only a handful of months.

I just worked it out and it's about $112/month for my 2300 sqft home. Oil heat. No central AC and no window units in the summer. We use fans in the windows when necessary.
My wife is constantly doing laundry, but we have a gas dryer. We also have a gas range top (electric oven). We have propane, not street gas. Haven't bought propane in 2 years.
hotkarl I used to pay my lipa bill upon receipt religously. Ever since the "fuel surcharge" I pay it when I get the "we've tried to contact you via telephone regarding your past due..." Screw em.
Oh, and you won't be getting a prepaid envelope anymore, so add another .42 to your bill.

My wife and I are considering leaving the city and moving to Valley Stream, but it seems that every forum I enter all I ever read is bad news, not only about valley stream, but about nassau in general. I am making a huge mistake? There have to be positives about Nassau county, can any one share.

I actually have a rental home in Valley Stream. I lived in it from 2004-2006 then moved out to WI for graduate school. I visit NYC every two months and check up on the home. The house is right down the block from Buck elementary school, were about 2 blocks from Lynbrook. Back then it was a quite area with most homes being owner occupied and the avg. age around 35-45. Still is a quite area, I never have a problem renting it out because people always want to get into school district 24, and the area is nice. There are some areas of VS that are not that great in terms of location , as to not offend people I won't mention those area's.
Just take a drive around the area and see for yourself. A good thing to do to gauge an area is to go there during various times of the day. Before we decided to buy, we went by the area during morning rush hour to see the traffic and kind of people that lived there, we then did the same around evening rush hour. We then went back later in the evening to see the level of traffic at night. You can get a good idea of what kind of area it is after a few days. We also made sure that we spent a weekend in the are just walking around.
You can get a house in the area for b/w 350K and 500K. Good Luck and feel free to send me any questions you may have regarding the area.

OMG ! I am sick to my stomach reading this we just moved into our new home a lil over 2 month now and my first months bill was 632.00 and I almost cried because our rental home we only payed 200 to 300 /bi monthly well this months bill came and we are hit with a 1,200.00 bill !!! me and my husband are ready to have a heart attach ... and for some reason this house has to meters !! on our other meter .. 1 month was 37.00 and this month is 50.00 so we have now paid nearly 2,000 for just 2 months !! I just called them to complain after reading this site and they tell me the meter on this house is not efficient for us and that we need to change it to the bimonthly one and it will not penalize us for using electric during the day like the one that is here now !! I can`t believe they will not reimburse us for anything ! this has got to be illigal if anyone knows anything or where I can go to ask for help please e`mail me @ mamma_nee@yahoo.com
