Riverhead is huge, and is the major hub for the East End. It has some bad parts, it has some really great parts, and it has lots of parts that are middle of the road. Not the greatest school district on the island, but not the worst either.
Bottom line, you can certainly do a lot worse. As far as retail is concerned, that area is pretty much it for Suffolk. If you can't buy it around there, chances are you can't buy it anywhere.
Hampton Bays is, as has already been alluded to here, the cheaper of the Hamptons. Still, you can find some nice property there if you're willing to look. The summer season brings a whole different crowd of people to the area who tend not to really care too much about keeping the place tidy, quiet, or liveable - so keep that in mind.
Good luck!

i work in Riverhead just off Rt 58 by the Home Depot center and i do a majority of my shopping in the surrounding stores. There aren't any stores i stay away from well except for the Walmart and that has to do with how the store is kept and not any "danger" factors.
I second the Wading River/Ridge area. I live around there and the back roads into Riverhead past the farms is a nice morning ride.

What about looking to live on the North Fork? Starting in Laurel and heading east is the Mattituck-Cutchogue district, which is very good. Look at GreatSchools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community for info on the schools.
I personally prefer the Riverhead district to some of the North Shore towns mentioned in this thread, and I live in Riverhead. But every family has different needs. It sounds as though you first need to decide if this is where you want to work, then look at where to live. You might be working in the most beautiful part of Long Island -- you've got a lot to choose from for living.

I totally agree with you on the North Fork ....great picks of you dont mind the commute.
I disagree on the North Shore.
Mt Sinai/Miller Place/Rocky Point/SWR and even Longwood are much much better districts than Riverhead.
From what I hear Riverhead HS is not only bad its dangerous, Id put it in the same camp as Floyd HS.
Most parents with $$ send their kids to Mercy to avoid it.
Elementary schools are fine (particularly Aquebogue).

the business deal got killed off due to an annoyingly indecisive owner, but I want to thank everyone for their input.

Crooks-Good comparison to Floyd- both are solid, diverse districts with plenty of opportunities and house talented, dedicated staff. I'm a teacher in Riverhead district for the past 12 years. Used to be sketchy years ago,but the district has made leaps and bounds. I personally see it as a hidden gem. Blue Ribbon School status at Roanoke Elementary, huge leaps in test scores, phenomenal athletics, graduation rates up, kids go off to Ivy Leagues. On the other hand, private schools like Mercy are sometimes limited in what they can offer. Some people have an arcane, negative perception of Riverhead which for the most part is unsupported today. It's not Mayberry, but it is a good area with relatively low taxes, convenient to all, golf, wineries, a downtown that is stirring. This is all coming from someone who grew up in a swanky east end town and graduated from WHB schools. As with anything, you get what you put into it. We live in the district and have no qualms about sending our kids through Riverhead.
