Default Need to Find a senior community 55 and older

my mother and I and her sister live in Virginia, and want to move to Long Island where she can rent a home according to your income and find a suitable nursing facility for her sister. I was looking in Glen Cove, but don't know too much about the neighborhood, and need transporation to Manhattan. Can anyone give me more details about the housing situation in Glen Cove, Bethpage, or Valley Stream Village. Thank you

Susan23, http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...glen-cove.html is a recent thread about the City of Glen Cove and http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...ey-stream.html is a recent thread about the Valley Stream area (includes the Village of Valley Stream, the Hamlet of North Valley Stream and the Hamlet of South Valley Stream).

In case you are unfamiliar with the local geography:

What people refer to colloquially as "towns" are actually villages and hamlets, which are within actual towns; and, because villages and hamlets are referred to as "towns", then, many times, the error is compounded when actual towns are referred to as "townships".

Also, many colloquially refer to a "downtown business district" in a hamlet as a "village".

http://www.city-data.com/forum/new-y...-glossary.html and http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html may be of some help to you in understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland".

http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...you-think.html may help you understand the great geographic confusions caused by non-conforming ZIP Code postal zones.

You can get a fact sheet for any city, village or hamlet on Long Island by going here American FactFinder and input the name of the city, village or hamlet for "city/town" (leave out the ZIP Code) and New York for "State", and then click "GO".

You'll get a lot of demographic, and some economic, statistics for the city, village or hamlet you selected, and if you click on "Reference map" (it's on the right hand side), you'll get a map.

When you do find a house that you like, you can find out in which community (city, village or CDP) that house is actually located, which is oftentimes different from the community named in that house's mailing address, by using the Census Bureau's online address search function. (CDP or Census Designated Place is the Census Bureau equivalent for a hamlet in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.)

And, very importantly, among other things, the Census Bureau's online address search function also indicates in which school district an address is located.

It is very easy to get into Manhattan from Valley Stream. The train runs frequently. There is a senior housing development in VS just off of Merrick Road and it has been there a long time. I don't know the eligibility requirements for it and I was under the impression, it was not easy to get in. It may be some sort of subsidized housing. Someone else on the forum may have more information. If you can afford an assisted living facility and that is the type of housing that you are looking for, there are many of those places all over Long Island. There is a fairly new 55+ housing development near The Source on Old Country Road, but that is not close to the LIRR. Another forum member may know the name. I believe that most of the newer 55+ housing developments-the ones with a club house, etc. are in Suffolk

How about Long Beach?

Other than that I would think Nassau would be a nightmare driving as a senior with all the congestion.
Perhaps Im wrong.

Id love to retire to Manhattan vehicle free.

does anyone else know about this new senior development "The source on old country road". Is that in Mineola. Is Long Beach far from the LIRR. I need to compute to manhattan for employment. Is Suffolk close to the LIRR. What transportation is around to get to New York City? Need a nursing home close to everything, and a community that is fairly decent. Any new senior developments, please let me know. Thanks guys for all your input. A great help.
