Default How long it will take to evict a tenant in Great Neck?

We are purchasing a house in GN, but the tenant refuses to move out and did not pay the rent for this month (told by seller). They do not have a lease. And the seller's attorney already serve the tenant. But I want to know how long it will take for this process, so we can setup the closing date? anyone has experiences? thanks so much!

It can take several months.

All I can say is DO NOT SIGN THE CONTRACT until you are absolutely sure the tenants are OUT OF THE HOME (I mean sure, like personally inspect the property and make sure they and their belongings are GONE) because if you don't make sure and go through with the closing and the tenants are still there, YOU are the one who inherits the problem of evicting the tenants and the old owners get off scot-free.

Once you do close on the house, change all the locks and install a security system immediately since the former tenants could be vindicitive.

Contact the Nassau County Sheriff's Department, they handle the actual eviction.

"Great Neck" covers a much larger area than the Village of Great Neck: more than 8 of every 10 places with a "Great Neck, NY 11020 through 11024" mailing address (6,022 acres) are NOT in the Village of Great Neck (866 acres), and it may depend on whether the house you are buying is in the Village of Great Neck, or in one of the other 8 self-governing villages that are all or partly within the "Great Neck, NY 11020 through 11024" ZIP Code postal zone or in one of the 4 hamlets, that are governed on an at-large basis by the Town of North Hempstead, that, too, are within the "Great Neck, NY 11020 through 11024" ZIP Code postal zone.

Places that have a "Great Neck, NY 11020 through 11024" mailing address that are not in the Village of Great Neck are in the Village of Great Neck Estates, the Hamlet of Great Neck Gardens, the Village of Great Neck Plaza, the Hamlet of Harbor Hills, the Village of Kensington, the Village of Kings Point, the Village of Lake Success, the Village of Russell Gardens, the Village of Saddle Rock, the Hamlet of Saddle Rock Estates, the Village of Thomaston and the Hamlet of University Gardens.

You can find out in which community (city, village or CDP) the house you are buying is actually located, which is oftentimes different from the community named in that house's mailing address, by using the Census Bureau's online address search function. (CDP or Census Designated Place is the Census Bureau equivalent for a hamlet in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.)

Thanks for your advice. Still waiting for more info from seller.

I agree do not sign the papers until you know the tenant is out. It will become a nightmare. It can take months ; dont inherit someone else's problem

Agree with the above poster. It can take up to 6 months to get the tenant out - and then you have to see if they trash the place. Wait until the tenant is out to set up the closing date (provided the place isn't trashed) - and in the meantime, keep looking at houses.

It takes many months or 5 minutes, depending upon how it is handled.
