The 2 cities were Brooklyn (1834) and Williamsburg (1851) formed from the Town of Brooklyn and the Town of Williamsburg, respectively.

grant516 is on a distinguished road
NYS will allow you to turn in your CA Drivers License for a NYS one with no further testing- you can however register a car with an out of state drivers license if you so wish.

I have a CA Drivers License and my car registration is with New York.

You may have to step back and really think about this situation, and how much you are shifting parts of your life around for a friend- I'm sure there is some noble cause-
but you're looiking at some serious challenges in all these commutes you may be creating.

As an owner, you should be able to insure and register a car without having any driver's license; you just cannot drive it if you do not have a driver's license, but a driver's license is not a prerequisite to insuring and registering a car.

Of course, you can drive in NY with a CA license. Get your license in CA. That isn't a problem.

You do not want to take the train to Stony Brook on a daily basis for school, not only because of the infrequency of that line, but because the walk from the railroad station to the part of campus where most classes are held is a rather long walk and will be quite cold and nasty in the winter.

Driving in the area of Stony Brook will be fine for a new driver. It is more suburban and more like Torrance.

Our "freeways" here are called parkways. They are narrower here with two to three lanes in each direction and have more twists and turns than what you are used to. There is no way that you will be driving to Brooklyn two to four times a week. You would be exhausted. It is a long, tedious, rough ride and takes about the same time as driving from LA to San Diego. This is not an easy drive for an inexperienced driver. Also be aware that street parking in Bensonhurst can be rather difficult. Make sure that you learn how to parallel park when you take driving lessons. That is a must in Brooklyn. You are not going to find many open air parking lots there. Bensonhurst is a very congested area.

It will take some adjustment to getting used to the weather. The nice part is that we don't have that 20-30 degree drop in temperature between day time and night time. However, it is a lot cloudier and wetter. We get more rain and of course some snow. Go listen to the song California Dreaming. Bring gloves, scarfs, sweaters, a heavy coat, boots. You can actually swim in the water here at Long Island beaches and the water temperature in the summer is actually warmer here than in SoCal. And we do have surfing here too. The land is also flatter.

As far as the snobby high school crowd, we have plenty of that here too.
