$25 added to the re-registration fee, plus another $20 if you want to keep your existing plate number (except personalized plates - no extra charge beyond the $25).

Umm ok? You do know there are license plate readers on Police cars right?
Also as a way of collecting tolls, they looked into it for the East River Bridges.

If I currently have the white ones and like them, can I keep them? Or will I be forced to switch to new hideous yellow ones? My car is white so you can imagine how an ugly yellow plate will look.....

Nope. Next time you renew your registration, you have to get the plates.

I heard the plates might end up being free if they can come up with money elsewhere, or something to that effect, but they are supposedly still going ahead with new plates regardless of the outcome.
