I understand your dilemma: you're darned if you do, darned if you don't. But let's look at the FACTS:

The consequences of getting H1N1 are real and can be quantified in the hundreds and thousands (i.e., # infected, # died). That is not being overdramatic. Those are numbers. The consequences of the H1N1 vaccine -- and the regular flu shot -- are either non-existent or neglible. Chances are, yes, if your kid gets infected they will be fine. BUT this virus has impacted previously healthy young people more seriously, and fatally, than regular flu virus. This is what is of concern.

Unfortunately "common sense" alone won't protect a child from getting infected and the possible virulent effects.

The CDC currently states all people ages 6 mos-24 yrs. get the vax as a priority group. Doctors are giving the vaccine to their own children.

Speak with your pediatrician first and foremost.

In the end, follow your gut but listen to reason. Here is an interesting article to de-bunk a lot of the ignorant backlash to the "hype":

Swine flu: Eight myths that could endanger your life - New Scientist

exactly!!!!!!!! and because it was previously asked my son who is 9 got the shot today and my 17 month old is getting the shot tomorrow. My oldest has epilepsy and the jury is out on if the mist is safe for him.The younger one is too young for the mist (it is for over 2) I know children with asthma should only get the shot because the mist can trigger an attack. After speaking with all my son's docs they recommended the vaccine for both of my kids. They also told me again today that it is hitting children harder than the typical flu. It does not mean everyone will have a severe case but in general it has been more fatal and IMO it is not worth the risk to not get the vaccine. As far as side effects I will report back. So far oldest son is totally fine and he had his shot around 4:30pm today.

I got my kids the H1N1 mist. That was almost 4 weeks ago. I wasn't going to get it but my mom (a registered nurse) freaked me out and I was lucky to get in with my pedi when they had it. Kids had the seasonal vax in September.

Big outbreak of H1N1 here in GC last year (kept out of the media) but not hearing too much about it this year.

alright. i had some family members get on my case as well about getting it. will place a call to the ped's and ask him again if he can go through what he thinks in regards to my children.
my kids got the flu mist for the regular flu for the first time this year and one of them had a bad reaction. if we find the shot available we will opt for the shot rather than the mist. thanks to everyone.

Some pediatricians (like ours!) have run out of flu vaccine, both regular and H1N1. Our kids were supposed to have their shots on Nov 2 and the office called a few days before and said that they would call us when it came in

Let me beat you over that lil' noggin of yours with facts. H1N1 not included. now go back to worshipping your Al Gore shrine.

My 5 year old asthmatic son is currently batteling the swine flu. He was diagnosed and started on tamiflu, Sunday the 8th while in the emergency room for a high fever. He was out of school all of last week, and will be all of this week. He may be able to return next week, but only because there are 3 days next week that are 1/2 days.

His fever ended Tuesday the 10th without fever meds. He still has to take xopenex 5-6 x per day, his regular pulmicort, and oral steroids (which increase his already horrid behavior). This will continue for at least another 2 weeks.

When he goes back to school he will not be able to participate in outdoor recess for a while. Gym is possible depending on the activity.

He's had the seasonal flu before, but this one really just sucks. He's still at risk for being hospitalized.
