You never know. They are digging way below ground level, even below sea level. It would not be a big hassle for most people. I guess we'll see.

Ah, the deli and bagels thing.

What you do have in places down south are little hole in the wall local places that wouldn't survive here..barbecue and chicken and diner type places. I'm not saying it would make up for the lack of good pizza and bagels, but there's more to life than Pizza, bagels, and pastrami.

What's REALLY lacking is array of ethnic food you have here..Greek, Middle Eastern, Indian, Thai, etc. I can do without Italian for the rest of my life, I've had plenty of it.

Doesn't matter, NIMBY is king and the people in those communities have the money behind them. I can't see the cross sound ever happening.

you're probably right. If Moses, who may have been the most powerful public official of the last 100 years, couldn't get it done...the current guys aren't going to be able to pull it off either.

I hear you. I just think the fact that this is a tunnel that will be under all environmentally sensitive areas makes it a big plus. I would think that back then they didn't have the tech to make this happen. It's not only good for the LI economy, it's good for traffic, air quality, and for evacuation if needed. Plus, it just makes sense. There needs to be more connection to the mainland for a variety of reasons.

I would think something like this could get BIG Fed money if sold correctly. I know they want to do it privately, but I would think both would be more feasible. We can only hope.

while delis and bagels and pizza aren't exactly the most important things in the world, to me it speaks to a larger issue. It's not just having to deal with chain restaurants....it's the "chain culture" or "chain lifestlye" that seem to pervade so many of these areas far from major cities.

It's just not for me.

Well, people from Manhattan and Brooklyn would say the same thing about Long Island, or they'd say "how much low grade red sauce Italian junk can you eat? Pffft."

the various appeals of Manhattan factor into the "why I like LI" equation for me...and others who work and spend a lot of time there.

Surprisingly, even remote places have ethnic food that is not too far away. This is true especially in a college town ( Charlottesville, VA , Austin, TX etc have plenty of ethnic foods and good bbq)

Because it's so close to NYC and all its amenities. Some things you can't find in other cities. Also, this is where my family is.
