Getting from Manhattan to Suffolk & vice versa should be fine, depending on where in Suffolk. It's from Suffolk to other places in Suffolk that could be difficult if the 2 towns aren't on the same line.
There are a few people in my company who do it (Manhattan to Melville). A bunch of them carpool, but some of them just drive by themselves. It takes about an hour each way to drive and in general you are going against traffic, so its not bad.
I agree your job should be walking distance from LIRR or should be an easy bus ride (many stations have buses that stop there, but some do not). Anything else and you are talking cab fare every day on top of LIRR fare.
Also what hours will you be working?
The LIRR has way more trains going in than out of the city during the morning rush hour and way more trains going out than in during the evening rush hour.
You may very well end work at 5:30 pm but the next train going to Manhattan is 7:00 pm.

Melville isn't really suffolk...and probably isn't the suffolk OP is referring to.
yeah but I don't think that's what the OP meant...I am guessing he/she means mid-suffolk...just an assumption. Melville is close to Nassau.
