Carolyn your best mode of transportation if you are going to commute back and forth to work is the LIRR. There are no stops at Fort Salonga or Centerport but the closest station is Huntington. It should take about 1hr 10-15 mins by railroad into Penn Station.

Default For those who may not be familiar with Fort Salonga

For those who may not be familiar with Fort Salonga:

Fort Salonga is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) partly in the northeast part of the Town Huntington and partly in the northwest part of the Town of Smithtown, Suffolk County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Fort Salonga in the Towns of Huntington and Smithtown is bordered on the north by Long Island Sound; on the east by the Hamlet of Kings Park in the Town of Smithtown; on the south by the Hamlet of Commack in the Town of Smithtown and the Town of Huntington, by the Hamlet of East Northport in the Town of Huntington; and, on the west by the Village of Northport in the Town of Huntington.

Fort Salonga is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of Fort Salonga have a "Northport, NY 11768" and "Kings Park, NY 11754" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

Default For those who may not be familiar with Centerport

For those who may not be familiar with Centerport:

Centerport is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the north-central part of the Town of Huntington, in the northwest part of Suffolk County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Centerport in the Town of Huntington is bordered on the north by Huntington Bay; on the east by Northport Harbor, the Village of Northport and the Hamlet of East Northport; on the south by the Hamlet of Greenlawn; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Huntington.

The Hamlet of Centerport has a different border than does the "Centerport, NY 11721" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have other than a "Centerport, NY 11721" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Centerport): there are places in the Hamlet of Centerport with a "Huntington, NY 11743" mailing address.

If I'm reading the map correctly, the part of the Hamlet of Fort Salonga that is in the Town of Huntington is in the Northport-East Northport Union Free School District and the part of the Hamlet of Fort Salonga that is in the Town of Smithtown is in the Kings Park Central School District.

I believe most of FS is Kings Park SD. Some may be Northport, most being Kings Park. Fort Salonga is a gorgeous area, love it.

Commutes to NYC would be at least 1.5 hrs each way.

Centerport is Harborfields.

Fort Salonga is Kings Park mostly and some MAY be Northport. Check MLS. But I know someone who lives there and this is what she said.
