I have homes both in eastern queens and nassau co. I wouldn't think twice about moving out of Nassau and to another area with far lower taxes.
Over the long term, you are contributing hundreds of thousands of dollars to the system that you could be keeping in your pocket for your retirement.
For example, 3 bedroom house in queens, walking distance to all stores and a nice backyard, friendly neighbors, driveway and garage. My total property tax is 3000. City tax does add to that.
Nassau co house is 4 bedroom, have to drive to everything, larger yard (more grass to cut), less friendly neighbors, driveway and garage. Total property tax is 11,000 and increasing at 2-4% average.
In Connecticut there are areas where for similarly priced homes you get 2 acre of land, large house, 2 car garage, etc. for 3000-4000 taxes.
There is nothing particularly special or attractive on LI. The mismanagement of public funds and cronyism has bankrupted the community; and, you are not going to get bailed out unlike the banks.
