Default Woodbury, NY (LI) - looking for more info (religious)

Can anyone tell me about Woodbury? Whatever you have to share. Is it mostly Jewish? Is it mixed? Any Catholics?

Thanks

Thumbs up Woodbury is a mix

The majority religion in Woodbury seems to be Jewish. However there is an equally vibrant close knit Catholic and Luthern community. The Local Roman Catholic church is Holy Name of Jesus. It has a mass said in Korean and 3 other masses. They have a great CCD program and a wonderful Senior Citizen's program. There are just under 1000 families in the parish.

Enjoy the diversity. It is a great place to live.

For those who may not be familiar with Woodbury:

Woodbury is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the center-west part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the west part of Nassau County, along the Oyster Bay/Huntington Town line and the Nassau/Suffolk County line.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Woodbury in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by the Village of Laurel Hollow; on the east by the Hamlet of West Hills and the Hamlet of Melville in the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County (the Oyster Bay/Huntington Town line and the Nassau/Suffolk County line); on the south by the Hamlet of Plainview; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Syosset.

The Hamlet of Woodbury has a different border than does the "Woodbury, NY 11797" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Woodbury, NY 11797" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Woodbury and a place can be in the Hamlet of Woodbury and have other than a "Woodbury, NY 11797" mailing address): there are places in the Hamlet of Woodbury that have a "Plainview, NY 11803" mailing address and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Syosset that have a "Woodbury, NY 11797" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County):

Jewish population is predominantly secular and, like its sister hamlets of Syosset and Jericho, not very welcoming to Torah observant.

Towns or areas with substantial Jewish populations on Long Island are:

Nassau County:
Great Neck
Cedarhurst
Lawrence - growing Hasidic community according to Newsday
Hewlett
Atlantic Beach
Elmont - once upon a time, probably in rapid decline.
Long Beach - some Hasidic
Valley Stream - maybe not so much anymore, changing area
East Rockaway
Baldwin - probably in decline from what I've read on these boards
Manhasset Hills and Manhasset
Searingtown
North Hills
Albertson
East Hills
Syosset
Woodbury
Plainview - lots of Reform Jews, but may be more Conservative or Orthodox now.
Bellmore - probably more Italian than Jewish
Merrick - probably more Jewish than Italian
Wantagh
Massapequa - hence Matzo - pizza other half is Italian
Roslyn and Roslyn Heights
Port Washington
Jericho
West Hempstead - growing Orthodox community
These areas have older temples: Freeport, Hempstead, Westbury, Glen Cove

Suffolk County
Commack - growing Jewish community from what I understand. Jewish Y is there.
Dix Hills - home of Congressman Steve Israel
Huntington - many temples in Huntington Station
Melville
Kings Park
East Northport
Amityville - once upon a time, older temples there
Smithtown - ? I've heard from Jews I know that Smithtown is hostile towards Jews.
Stony Brook
Port Jefferson - many temples in Port Jefferson Station
Mt. Sinai
Patchogue - older temple there
Bay Shore - once upon a time
Holbrook - Steve Levy grew up there

The above is based on simply looking up where most Jewish Synagogues are on LI.

I have a friend, two, who own a beautiful little beach home in Woodbury, LI.

Both Jewish, gay women.

Beach home? The Hamlet of Woodbury is landlocked, totally surrounded by land on all sides. Hence, no beach, and, I would guess, no beach home.

Maybe she means Woodmere?

not very welcoming to Torah observant.

What exactly is that? Sorry, but I really have never heard that term. Is that Orthodox?

While no part of the Hamlet of Woodmere adjoins a body of water, parts of the Village of Woodsburgh and the Village of Hewlet Neck that have a "Woodmere, NY 11598" mailing address do adjoin a body of water, and there could be a beach house that has a "Woodmere, NY 11598" mailing address in either of those two villages.

Yes, Orthodox (includes the modern Orthodox, Chasidim and Yeshivish Orthodox) as well as those Conservative Jews who actually practice Conservative Judaism, some times referred to as Conservadox.

Torah observant refers to observing the 613 Commandments (the Ten Commandments are the chapter headings under which the other 603 Commandments are organized) given to Moses at Sinai as found in the Torah (Five Books of Moses), and as specified in the Talmud (the Talmud includes the Oral Torah that was also given to Moses at Sinai and, after being orally passed from generation to generation, until the 2nd century C.E., when the Oral Torah was compiled and written down in a document called the Mishnah).
