Default Paid $2.96 a Gallon for Oil Today: Decent price?

Paid $2.96 a gallon for oil today for 170 gallons. This is after a discount from HEAT USA that I get from a union. Is that a decent price?

This season is killing my wallet.

That's a little under the average right now.
Many people who use COD are paying less, but of course you probably have a contract with an oil service provider which is why your (our) rates are higher. I was already slightly over $3 at the end of December and prices have gone up. And with this extreme cold weather, we are going to need more oil. Sigh.

I know people say that if you have a contract with the oil company you can't get COD. But how would they know if I got 200 gallons from someone else??? I'm seriously considering COD due to the cost of oil.

$2.93 last delivery. That's my cap.
As far as the contract stuff, most if not all of these companies monitor your usage, in fact that's how they figure out when to give you a delivery, so if they come to drop your normal usage of let's say 180 gallons, and the tank only takes 50, they may think something is up. They gotta prove that you purchased somewhere else though.
I don't know anybody that has done this and gotten busted though, so I really don't know what would happen *IF* you got caught.
I admit, I've added some fuel to my tank on occassion, but it wasn't purchased, I've gotten it from friends/family doing gas conversions, and it was never a crazy amount either, I think the most I ever got was like 75 gallons.

The wholesale price of heating oil was $2.20-03/100 at the close of Friday's (January 8) trading session.

You can easily monitor the heating oil regular session futures prices on the New York Mercantile Exchange (because these prices are available at no charge, they come with a 30-minute delay).

I remember paying $4 a gallon two winters ago and I had 1,000 gallon tank
Now that I stopped using that prehistoric dinosaur fuel I'm paying less. About 40 a month less but heating up 4 x's the area Natural gas is the way to go.

Wow... I feel a little better about paying 2.77 this morning now. I use a neighbor and don't really shop around, so I'm glad to see that the rate was competitive.

This oil thing is still new to me and darn it if it doesn't smart each time I pony up for a delivery.

Under contract with slomins @ $2.69 since November, and I thought that was too high. They come every 2 or 3 weeks lately, always about 65-70 gal. to fill up. Its kind of annoying getting deliveries that frequent but also better then getting on e lump bill for $700

No need to panic. Al Gore will be giving a press conference shortly to calm the masses.
