How likely do you think it would be that soda consumption will drop on Long Island due to the proposed "soda tax" Paterson is proposing? An additional tax of one penny per ounce, so that 12oz can just went up in price by a minimum of a twelve cents.

Probably not much. People as as addicted to sugar as nicotine. It's a ridiculous tax, IMO.

There need to be cuts in pension benefits and free healthcare to those on the state dole. Even a 5% decrease in benefits to those retiring on state pensions would save the state billions.

To be replaced by another fool.

What exactly has Patterson done that is foolish? He's got both sides yelling about how awful he is, the Republicans (who simply want to regain power) and the unions...sounds to me like he's doing something right.

Doing the right thing now means pissing somebody off. The wrong thing to do would be pass the buck. But, it's easy to call him a fool, so go right ahead.

Don't think it'll make much of a difference. Cigarette prices keep rising and that hasn't really deterred anyone. Granted nicotine is more of an addiction than coca-cola is, but if people want something bad enough, they will pay whatever price to get it. What a sick sad world we live in.

I think soda should be banned...there's a reason why America is the fattest country in the world.

The television is the #2 reason why people are fat, we should ban that also.

Here's an idea...let the state give everyone a gym membership paid for by an annual credit tax credit of say $250. The amount of healthcare expense saved by the state will more than offset the amount of the tax credit and any proposed taxes on soda consumption.

The only problem I see with this, is a few resourceful folks will claim their dog "rover" has a gym membership and perhaps, their dead relatives as well. Unfortunately, people are always looking to game the system.

The problem with that is people would actually have to use the gym. This requires the effort of getting off the couch and putting down the 2 liter bottle of coke.

They need to quit beating up the little guy.
Tax the wealthy. Rich people cannot live without certain things and will continue to pay no matter what.

When I run for Governernor I propose the following:
*Luxury tax on any bottle of wine costing more than $9.95 retail
*Luxury tax on any uh, luxury vehicle. Me/Be, BMW, etc...any vehicle valued at over 55K retail. Heavy equipment and commercial vehicles would be exempt.
*Luxury tax on any cigar product retailing for more than .99
*Luxury tax on Country Club memberships.
*Additional usage tax on inground swimmming pools for any home valued at over 1 million bucks.
*Additional tax on tennis court on any property valued at over 1 million bucks.
*Snobbery tax for any individual earning over 500k per year.
*Aggressive and obnoxious driver tax on any individual owning a luxury vehicle.
*Luxury tax on any hair salon charging more than $60 for full service cut/color/style.
*Additional $10 per pack idiot tax on cigarettes.
*limit tax deductions for any civil service employee earning over 100K per year.
*Luxury tax on Perrier water
*Luxury tax on Grey Poupon mustard
*Luxury tax on caviar
*Knucklehead tax for people who post silly and unrealistic idiotic stuff like this on internet forums
