It depends because our standards of what a "crap town" is differ. I think we would all agree that Wyandanch is bad, however there are a lot of other areas we frequently disagree on here.
On Long Island, if you have no kids, go for the great house in a crap town. It really doesn't matter since on LI you drive to buy all your stuff if you're not ordering online, and the rest of your free time is consumed by the LIRR/MTA.

Need to understand what is meant by a "crappy town" and "great town." I would think neither of these descriptions are referring to areas that are not relatively safe. I see really nice neighborhoods (e.g. Westbury especially above Northern State Pkwy) that has been referred to as crappy on this site.

Westbury isn't the greatest... it's not Hempstead but I would rank it as one of the more crappier towns on LI... I wouldn't say it's "really nice"... it's decent

It doesn't look crappy to me, except for the area around the garbage dumps, which looks crappy in an industrial way and not a run down way
