Schmitt has always been that way, its part of the reason I was complaining last year about giving the GOP back control of the Legislature since that clown was going to become Majority leader. Schmitt was my legislator for a number of years, though with the 02 redistricting I was switched to the 14th (Mejias/Belesi) district. Moved since then, but still in the 14th.
If one good thing comes from this, if the anger persists, it could destroy his chance of Congress. He is very close with the another lunatic named Peter and probably would have been a front runner for his Congressional seat if or when he steps down from Congress.

For now the raises are on hold until the county attorney can weigh in.
Quote:
Republican Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos said Wednesday he would freeze the overall 42 percent pay raises given to county legislative leaders Monday until an opinion on the pay hikes is given by the county attorney.
"We will . . . await the results of the county attorney's review of the legality of the legislature's procedures prior to paying any increases," Maragos said in statement. His response came after a request for help from the legislature's minority leader, Diane Yatauro (D- Glen Cove ).
Yatauro asked Maragos in a hand-delivered letter to determine, in consultation with county attorney John Ciampoli, "whether any raises can be given out to Presiding Officer Peter Schmitt [of Massapequa ] and Deputy Presiding Officer John Ciotti [of North Valley Stream ], the other two leaders, who actually voted for them."
She also asked to be able to give her raise to needy county programs that have been cut. Maragos said his office is researching "our authority to grant" Yatauro's request.

Oh, that's right, they were listening to Sean Hannity tell us how un-American anyone who criticizes Bush was and how great their stock portfolio was.
Give me a friggin break. They're a bunch of lemmings being led around by their noses by talk radio and Fox news.
We need people to stand up for sound fiscal policy, proper spending, and lower taxes WHILE NOT BEING A BUNCH OF MORONS BECAUSE SOMEONE WAVES A FLAG IN THEIR FACE. See the difference?
Likewise with Nassau County, the vote against Suozzi was simply reactionary, it had nothing to do with policy. Suozzi moved the counties bond rating away from "junk" where the Republicans left it. I don't like the guy, but let's check back in 4 years how much the Republicans have helped the people in NC who aren't on the police payroll.

Sorry dman, wrong AGAIN. The tea party was with the nassau county democrats protesting the legislature pay raises. Your hatred and narrow-mindedness has totally blinded you. I thought those were traits of people on the right?

Just because its a bunch of pissed off taxpayers doesn't automatically = tea party people. Were some tea party people there? Yes, but it sure as hell wasn't the organized tea party efforts that bowed down to Schmitt & the GOP at the rallies last year.

The tea party movement had nothing to do with mainstream Republican party politics until the Republicans piggy-backed on these conservative activists because politically it played well against the incumbent Democrats. Tea Party activists consider themselves the real "conservatives" and have derided both Republican and Democratic spending over the past 10 years. In a lot of the fall '09 elections the Tea Party candidates ended up siphoning off some Republican support when they ran independently as the "true conservative."

Schmitt said he will propose rescinding the pay raises. Of course the three reasons he decides to give were known well before his decision to push the raises through in the first place....
Quote:
Bowing to a variety of pressures, Nassau County Legislature Presiding Officer Peter Schmitt said he will propose rescinding pay raises averaging 42 percent for himself, his deputy and the Democratic leader that was approved by Republicans on Monday.
Saying he didn't care what his Democratic colleagues were saying about the raises he had sponsored, he cited three reasons he reversed himself.
"First, as reported today, our county executive faces a predicted shortfall of $89 million in sales tax receipts to Nassau County for 2009.
"Second, I am influenced by the announcement that LIPA has rescinded its plan to give 2 percent raises to its employees this year.
"Lastly, the U.S. Department of Labor has reported that the average increase in compensation for U.S. workers reported in 2009 was the lowest in decades," Schmitt said.

As for his "reasons" ...
What did he think?
The general public was rolling in dough with raises and bonuses?
What planet does he and people like him live on if he really just figured that one out?
