Instead of bailing out corporations, he should begin infrastructure improvement projects, such as burying the power lines, new high speed rail, and green energy projects. This would make getting around the island much quicker, and appealing to business, with cleaner air and lower energy costs.
And the money saved from denying welfare or any govt benefits to illegals would probably erase the defecit in a few years, and allow tax cuts for citizens.
But Obama has done none of this, in alot of ways, he's not much different from Bush, except he supports illegals more and wants to give them free health benefits.
Thats why I voted 3rd party. If Mitt Romney was running on the Republican ticket it may have been a different story.
Here's another infrastructure project - run gas mains to all residential areas on the island. There is no reason why we should be held hostage to our "international" friends with oil, who then use our dollars to drop bombs on our boys serving overseas. Not too mention, I'm getting a little tired of hearing about suicide bombers on planes. Fire the TSA and start from scratch.

Unfortunately, nothing can really be done to help the majority on LI. The system in place will not allow it, no matter what President Teleprompter says

I want one person who voted for "CHANGE" to tell me how much "change" they think will be left in their pockets by the time this nincompoop gets thrown out of office? I just hope he stays in til his term runs out, because the two alternatives, Biden ("Plugs") and Pelosi ("***, ***, *** - what a disgrace to the Italians") are even more scarier.

The sad thing is, it's only going to get worse with the Supreme Court's recent decision to allow corporations to spend as much as they want on ads for or against candidates running for federal office. It's going to be government of the corporations, by the corporations, for the corporations.

Regarding the orignal topic, I would like the federal government to take into account the higher cost of living in this area when they offer various programs and loans. Even for certain types of college loans, there is a maximum income limit for the entire country and therefore doesn't take into account the higher salaries and cost of living in the NY area. Therefore, unfairly, middle class people from other parts of the country can qualify while New Yorkers cannot.
You'd be surprised...

What's the best thing that Obama can do that will have a positive and lasting impact on Long Island?

He can resign and go back to Chicago.

...and I want one person who voted for McCain to tell me what rabbit he had in his hat to fix this mess that's been created over the last 40 years.

Actually, he didn't have anything, he'd just continue the same policies that got us here in the first place....really not much different than what Obama is doing, he'd be just as beholden to the banks and Wall Street. It's funny that I hear some right wing commentators saying that Obama failed to regulate the banks since he came into office..the same guys spouting the nonsense that you can't regulate banks because you'd scare away the smart people from wanting to work there.

Me thinks that Republicans would say that Obama stinks no matter what he did. Regulate the banks? "SOCIALIST!!!"

Don't regulate them.

"What, why aren't you regulating the banks?"

Pretty transparent.

and as a hardcore left partisan, your viewpoint is transparent as well - "BO inherited a mess and there's nothing anyone could have done to fix it"... nevermind the hundreds of billion of dollars thrown at this problem which didn't do a darned thing except create a larger budget deficet that is unsustainable

I'm sorry that your ego was bruised by out discussion yesterday.

BO inherited this mess but thus far has done nothing to fix it. However, If he did what is necessary to fix it, you'd be calling him a Socialist along with the rest of the chorus of Fox News watchers. The banks need to be broken up. If they are "too big to fail", then they are too big to exist. And rest assured, what McCain would be doing would be just as expensive, and he'd be doing exactly what the banks want him to as well.
