Does anyone know if the Town of Huntington landfill, aka East Northport landfill on Townline Road pose any risk to the homes of Fort Salonga, which are directly North of it?

I know if you read the literature online, it says many wells were contaminated and they hooked them up to public water to rectify this. But is this the end of the story? Does the landfill still pose any other risks to the homes in that area? Can anyone add any input to this?

And public water, what does that mean? Were they really using well water beforehand?

Most landfills have issues with ground water contamination. They do a much better job now than when the first started landfills. Contamination tend to be for shallow wells. The direction of contmination depends on the flow of underground water whick if I had to guess, it would be North towards the sound.

Public water is pumped from much deeper wells so there is less chance of comtamination (but it still happens once in awhile). Its also tested and treated daily.

I'd be more concerned about the ash spewing out of the incerator than the landfill itself which has been capped for some time now.

Was a great place before they caped it,you could get parts for your lawn mower and an easy to fix garden hose. And a short drive east you might find parts for your car.it was called the dump in the good old days.
The TOH should make a ski/sled trail there, Charge admission and reduce our taxes.JMHO

Sure there are issues but if you are hooked up to public water you are fine.
