You probably should ask in the appropriate NC forum. There are ppl from all over including LI who now live there.

I liked the Raleigh area better, but really felt landlocked not being near any beach. So Wilmington was a nice surprise. It reminds me of Long Beach, which was comforting. There is a LOT of upscale shopping centers going up in Wilmington.

Wilmington is a about a hour drive from the Raleigh area (with no traffic). I vote for Raleigh area for much better job opportunities and culture. If I wanted to live closer to the water I would look in Charleston, South Carolina, much nicer area imo. I would post your questions on the Raleigh and Wilmington board.

I relocated to Raleigh from Long Island at the end of 2006. If you are retired, or work from home, or can find a job in Wilimington in your line of work, go for Wilmington. I know how it is growing up around water your entire life, so Raleigh may not work for you.

I actually just visited Wilmington last week for a couple of days. It's about a 2 hour ride from Raleigh, not bad at all. Wrightsville Beach was really nice, I felt like I was back on Long Island at Cupsogue Beach again. I prefer the triangle area though, as it was a best fit for my needs, including finding a job and home. I really enjoyed visiting Wilmington though, and really was happy to see the ocean again. You can't go wrong with either area, in my opinion.
