We actually want to switch to gas heat down the line also. we just bought our house in November and it has oil heat, but a gas fireplace, gas stove and gas hot water heater. so hopefully the switch should be pretty easy.....:-) I hope...lol

since you already have Gas line in your house the switch over should be a lot easier. just make sure you get the qualified person to do it for you.
ooh yea... dont forget to take the fill pipe out because there are some wack job oil companies that come and try to fill your basement up with oil. it was in the news.
first thanks for all your help.
does oil cost a fortune? it sounds like your at the mercy of the oil companies. how many times a year do you have to refill the tank?
The price of gas and oil yo-yo's.
Right now gas may be cheaper or equal to oil but in a few years it could be more than oil. I remember a while back when gas was through the roof compared to oil.
The advantage to gas is that it requires less maintenance and burns cleaner, so you should have little or no soot/dust issues in your home.
Oil arguably, burns more efficiently than gas, however needs routine tune-ups/maintenance for it to run at it's optimal efficiency.
The best advantage of oil is that you can shop around for the best price and be in total control of usage. With gas, you got Keyspan and that's it, you are totally at the mercy of whatever they charge and any games or shenanigans they pull.
Also, there is an increased health risk with gas. Other than the obvious like a huge explosion, you are more likely to suffer from carbon monoxide issues with gas.
Although, You probabally have a bigger chance of getting struck by lightening.
Dollar for dollar they are both pretty level when you factor in all the pro's/con's.
It really narrows down to personal preference.
For me, the biggest advantage for gas, again is the cleanliness of it. Little maintenance and usually the equipment is much more compact and takes up less space in your home. And normally, especially newer burners, runs much quieter, you'll barely know the thing is running.
All that being said, if I had the extra coin, for my own personal reasons I would switch to gas, but I have no real problem or issues with oil heat, and it would not deter me from buying a house if it had oil heat, while gas would be the preference.
serious question: has anyone ever heard of anyone switching from gas to oil?
Ha ha! yes!
A friend of my old man owns his own oil business. When he bought his house he switched over to oil. True story.
