Ain't about none of that non-sense.
It's about laxman paying his taxes like the rest of us.
But claim it's something else.
Hey lax,
Who paid the premium for the insurance? Bet it wasn't you.
Pay your taxes.

I don't know about retirement, but I do know that it is an unholy pain in the neck in terms of paperwork for disability if you're out on injury for a defined period of time.
From what I've seen with people I know who have been through it, make sure that you have any paperwork you're supposed to have from the department. Then make sure that what the department gives you is crystal clear, with dates, explanations, and so on. Also don't rely on any local tax advocates to know what they're doing.
And don't be surprised if any refunds you and your wife might be entitled to are held up pending review. Even if the department tells you the paperwork they've given you is correct, the IRS can be particular in what kind of forms it wants to see.
I know someone who filed last March (2009) and is still getting a runaround on a refund. His department (not NYPD) gave him A and the IRS wanted B. So he told his department he needed B and they gave him C. The IRS then said, "No, not C, we want B." And then the "advocate" said C should work if there is no B. Finally someone at the IRS said, "If you don't have B, we still cannot take C, but we can take D," and he had to go back to his department and get D and oy yoy yoy, here it is nearly a year later. He's back on active duty and is about to file this year's return. He will probably get this year's refund before he gets last year's refund, which is supposedly on its way.
But hey, at least they retired you. I know people who have been out for years because the department won't let them go. They can barely move, but maybe the department figures old age will get them before their duty-related injuries will.

Reason: Because I hate run-on sentences, even though the experience is a run-on.

And unless you know something about civil service benefits, you are talking about things you don't understand.

Lax, I've been on these boards just about two months, and if there's one thing I've learned, it's that there are always going to be people who a) don't like law enforcement personnel, b) are trolling around just looking for what someone else might be getting that they aren't, instead of worrying about themselves.
Good luck. I hope it all works out for you.

LaxMan,
#1.. wrong board to be asking these questions, most will crucify you here. I know your not bragging or anything but most people will see as " I don't have a benefit like that......so you shouldn't also" Outside of the job people don't realize how the procedures work so...........and they can get very passionate on here.
#2..If your out 3/4's it's a wash come tax time even if you are getting SSD. With the wife working it's a different story. It's now a one income home regardless of how much you are getting. If your wife wasn't working you wouldn't even have to file. In all the years you have been getting your taxes done haven't you been going to a tax guy that at least has some knowledge of Police Officers returns?? If not you're losing a lot of deductions...if you haven't you should at least get one this year, just for piece of mind. And if you have been using one, just hand over your paperwork as usual.....nothing they haven't seen or done thousands of times.
#3..If you move out of state everything will remain tax free-status quo.
I thing I seen you talk about insurance before. I also retired also 3/4's and ssd and moved down south (VA). I have GHI also and it's very hard to find DR.'s that take it but I did find a pediatrician that took it and they are only 3 miles away. So the kids are covered and if your out with ssd after two years you will be covered under medicare. They will only cover you..period.
They only reason my wife is working right now is for her benefits.
#4..If you have any questions feel free to direct message me

You shouldn't focus your energy on the negative. My dad is Ret NYPD...I understand the concept.
Your tax person will give you the best advise.
