Eagle Estate
Hello,
I was doing some research and I noticed you wrote the message below regarding Eagle Estates in Medford back in 2007. I was wondering what makes you say not to live there and what are the negatives? My husband and I are first time home buyers and found a house that would be perfect for us, but I've been hearing a lot of negative feed back about the area then came across your message below.
Moderator cut: sorry, no private e-mails here. Have people DM you instead.
[quote=Sloan-Ranger;1596667]I lived in Medford for most of my life and I have family that still live nearby. It's changed tremendously in the past 10 years, good and bad. The schools were really good but have become much more overburdened and no longer have top ranking. The high school is HUGE now with the new addition. There are bad sections (do NOT live in Eagle Estates) but that's true of every town.

I had a short term girlfriend in there back in the early 90's, and it was bad then. I remember going to visit one of her friends, and I couldn't believe the condition of the house. It was filthy inside and out. Another friend of mine had friends in there, and I remember almost getting into a brawl with some thugs who refused to get out of the street as we were driving though..we were white, they were not...etc.

My friend moved to CA in 1990 and comes back every so often to visit. During his last visit, he remarked that Long Island would be paradise if it had 1/2 the people and was more reasonably priced.

The houses on Long Island are very expensive, but I could never imagine leaving. It is like no place I've ever been. I love it here.

Long Island is a great place to live. The only thing I really don't like is the winter weather. You don't have to go far for anything. I know your hubby is going to be working in Medford.....there's lots to do. If you go out east a little more, there's the LI Game Farm and Atlantis Marine World. If you like water parks, Splish Splash is not far either. Adventureland is about 40 minutes west. If you jump on the LIE (our main highway....you can get to NYC (or take the LI Railroad). Tons of malls.....the Bellport and Tanger outlets are out that way too. I don't know what your budget is but you can get alot for your money now. Suffolk county is alot cheaper than Nassau. The north shore is alot more expensive too...although the houses are absolutely spectacular. Don't get me wrong...there are plenty of dumps out there. If I can help ya in any way, let me know. I'm 33 and have lived here all my life. You will like it here.

isn't Medford not such a great area? or at least one time it wasn't...is that still the case?

The fact that in an area so close to the greatest city in the world, you need a car. Having to own and maintain a car is a huge expense, and a mean hit on those of modest means. And, the people who bag my groceries and have to take the bus have to stand and wait for it. because the people around here won't spring for a bench for them to sit on. That is a disgrace.
The standards of conformity. I'm apprehensive that if I go out without shaving, the police will razz me.
The way people drive. Yak yak yak on the phone, as they almost run over kids. It's a blatant disregard for human life. And there are ample resources to enforce the law. The police just can't seem to be bothered.
And, the provincialism. The people here...they never read the paper, they're full of peculiar narrow minded ideas and bigotries. There's no one to hold an intelligent conversation with.
I really hate this place a lot.

Come on, you'll get that anywhere!

Just an FYI...if you live in an incorporated village, you wind up in a good position, as village utilities are much cheaper and are superior. I grew up in Oceanside (not a village) but my husband and I bought a house in the incorporated village of Rockville Centre. The water and electric are cheap - the water tastes amazing and during the power outage of the summer of 2003, we had our own generator and only lost power for 30 minutes, due to a rolling blackout the village executed. So villages do have their perks.

but don't you pay village taxes on top of county taxes and whatever else?

Clamboy--you can't argue with people who think they are superior simply
because they have money. It's the worst sort of problem in many places--the well off vs. the working poor. See what this island is like without a middle class in a few more years.

I make an average salary...I am single...I am young...I own a home, and i do just fine. The ones who can't make it here are the ones who don't really want to. It's not that hard.
