1)Why because I lived there for 39 years, all my family and a lot of friends are still there.

2) I'm retired and have plenty of time on my hands, keeps the brain going

3) To inform and tell of my experiences....good and bad.

4) To help others........I've received over 200 Direct messages over the last year. I tell it like it it.....most have a question or some are planning to move and want real answers. I answered all as truthful as I can

5) I met 3 people from L.I. that I never knew or met that came down here. I gave them info/hotels/restaurant etc. One moved here and works with my wife.

These are just some of the reasons but there are more feel free to ask away......

Goochland is rural, Goochland is a place where food comes from, Goochland is a place where you still see bullet holes in road signs. The schools have always been poorer like many rural schools. Neither the rich or those who aren't really want a large middle class, they like it rural. It's the way the Island used to be before the middle class (us) moved in.

BTW, One of my best friends raises Arabians on his several acres. He's a programmer who makes a good wage but isn't rich, a WASP but is a true horse person.

BTW II, You all know that every person here is likely represented by at least one lobbyist?
How do you know I don't know anyone in Goochland (or at least know "of" some of the families in the upper crust there through my own relatives who reside in the south)?

If the "born affluent" disappeared from this county, it would not rank anywhere near as high as it is on the list because they are the ones with the most wealth concentrated in their relatively few coffers compared to the rest of the people living there.

Who is my lobbyist? I'd like to get to know him or her ...

Wow...how did a wealthy county thread turn into a bash-fest. Back to the general point. I am surprised that my former county, Fairfield County in CT, home of hedge funds and formerly Martha Stewart is nowhere to be seen...I am concerned for my former country club brethren...they seem to have fallen on hard times . Also, whenever I look at these lists I always hear the same 'ole adage in my head "It's not what you make, it's what you keep."

Now I am off to research the MLS in Goochland, because that is simply an awesome sounding name and I might need to move there...

Be careful moving to Goochland, "The Gooch" is not to be messed with, ask Arnold Jackson.

Actually, no, not across the board. Plenty of lobbyists work for non-profits who want federal money going not to the non-profit, but toward research by third parties. For instance the lobbyists for the American Society of Clinical Oncology would like tax money to go to cancer research conducted at NIH, or for some of the tax money that is given out by NIH (grants) to go toward cancer research done by universities.

What's more, the way non-profits are structured, the salaries must come from membership dues or donations. The lobbyists get paid by the organization's members to try to get already existing tax dollars directed toward research that would benefit said members and supporters. That's not the same as scooping money out of the public till, directly or indirectly, for themselves.

The places I lived in Virginia (wealthy) are nice because even though they are congested, there is less crime; the streets, sidewalks, and Metro are cleaner; the houses are newer and those that aren't are better maintained; there's more to do; there's more ethnic heterogeneity and multi-culturism, and the people don't complain incessantly about cops and teachers.

Plus, the people there are just happier. Washington D.C. is the 8th happiest place to live in the U.S., and that spreads out into its metro areas. Perhaps that's why I notice all of the complaining up here.

Exactly. The folks in Arlington, Alexandria, and Fairfax make up a disproportionate amount of the tax base for the Commonwealth.

If lobbyists are unsucessful at getting tax money directed to the causes they work for, they won't be getting a salary for long, wherever it comes from.

I know some lobbyists are actually doing good for the general public instead of being completely focused on greed.

Well first head to Short Pump on 250, and head about a couple of miles west and you'll be there. Oh, and if you like the name Goochland you may enjoy picking up a couple of acres in Bumpass.

BTW, CapOne has a large campus in Goochland.
