I was surprised that 8 of the top 25 in the U.S. came from one state
VIRGINIA
I couldn't help but notice that of those 8, 7 were right on top of Washington, DC. Is this because of all the politicians, lobbyists and such?
Which leads to my next question: Is Goochland County a vacation area for the wealthy Beltway set?
Not being familiar with VA, I want to ask -- is Fairfax City completely it's own county in addition to Fairfax County? Or does Fairfax City incorporate places from several counties? (like NYC has 5 boroughs.)

The D.C. metro area is one of the most highly educated area in the nation, if not the world, so there are a lot of professionals in fields that generate wealth. In no particular order:
1. Attorneys. Many of them are lobbyists, but law is a thing unto itself there. There are 276.7 attorneys for every 10,000 people in D.C. New York is a distant second with 20.4 attorneys per 10,000 people. Plenty of BMWs in D.C. for ya.
2 a. Defense contractors. They cleaned up during the Bush administration.
2 b. The military, namely the officer corps. Lots of field grade officers running around, and they are well-compensated.
3. The tech corridor in Reston.
4. A huge cluster of major medical centers and teaching hospitals.
5. Civil service, federal style.
This Wiki on Fairfax City is accurate, far as I can tell: Fairfax City Wiki
Can't tell you about Goochland, though. Sorry!
I lived in Fairfax for a few years, but Arlington was home. Ah, the old 'hood.
By the way, LOTS of people from the NY metro area down there, including people from Long Island.

Goochland county is literally 5 minutes down the road from me. It's pretty large and mostly rural, but is also home to quite a few affluent folks who have their estates there. And I do mean estates. Many even have hobby farms or raise horses. Most of the affluent folks are executives in near by Richmond and Henrico county. The schools are also in the not great category with most of the affluent sending their kids to private schools. A few years back the residents of Goochland had their own property tax shock because of the rich folks who settled their since their last assessments.
I couldn't say it's a vacation spot, but the NOVA crowd may have second homes or estates there, but it's mostly local boys.

heh funny... I've been throwing around the idea of the suburban DC area as you know... if it weren't for family and friends on the island I'd give it a go.

I was all excited to have a sister close by when I moved up here. And then five months later she moved to Florida.
