Ronkonkoma can be 2 different school districts, Connetiquout or Sachem both are really good districts. Sachem is larger than Connetiquot. I have friends in both and they like them. There are alot of activities for children in both, and there are many parks.

I can't give you a reference to a good real estate because in my opinion they are few an far between. What about rent.com or rent.net.

Lake Ronkonkoma is a beautiful area of Suffolk county. You have the lake of course but many other parks, like Connetquot, Nisseqougue, all around. Plus the streets are nicely wooded with oaks and pitch pine.
Shopping is never far, plus you have the LIRR Ronkonkoma line.
The area is very family friendly, and I've always felt safe walking around there. I visit the area often, usually when I do nature walks in Connetquot preserve.
