Default Paint can disposal

What is the best way for me to get rid of paint cans in nassau county? I've been told that I can't through them in the trash, but I don't know what else to do.

Contact your town and ask when they will be conducting their special waste collection.

Like house paint? Latex etc...?
That stuff if the can isn't almost full, leave the lid off and let it dry.
Pick out the chunks and then you can toss it in the trash.
I'll usually stomp on the empty can just so the garbage guys know immediately that it's empty.

Town of Hempstead has a program every so often where you can bring all of your leftover paint, and a bunch of other chemical type waste like cleaners, aerosol cans etc...Best bet is to make a phonecall.

Hide it in a bag with other garbage. They will pick it up.

That's illegal if it's an OIL based paint. EMPTY LATEX or WATER-BASED paint cans are ok though, at least in the Town of North Hempstead.

I think "illegal" might not be the appropriate word. I don't think the paint police are going to take me away in handcuffs. Besides, speeding is illegal but I bet you do that sometimes.

Hell, in that case, just dig a hole in your yard and bury it
Better yet, throw it your neighbors garbage in the middle of the night while the cans are curbside!
kidding of course...
