No one said we want to cut teacher/cop salaries to nothing. However, there can be some cuts and certainly we can revamp the pension and medical benefits portion of their compensation.
We can no longer afford to pay for 2 police forces...one out on patrol and the other collecting checks down in Florida.

Tough luck, you aren't going to silence anyone with your "why don't you *DO* somethings".

Silence someone? Protest is a fundamental RIGHT in this country, and no one should be forced into silence, whether they are right OR wrong. However, if you're so passionate, and feel that yours is an opinion that so many share, organize & run on a "fundamentally change NY" platform, rather then say "vote for this guy" platform. Do it yourself, versus vote for Levy, or any other career politician that's looking for any wave to ride in to expand their own power base. If you're ready to show all you've done to change what you feel is wrong, show us.

Teachers can't?
If they work extra periods, they get paid accordingly.
If they teach summer school, they get paid accordingly.
If they coach a sport, they get paid accordingly.
If they are student advisors, they get paid accordingly.
And on.
And on.
PS: Yes, police officers are eligible for overtime pay if they work more than their scheduled hours.

Tell us why you are so happy with the status quo when it comes to the state of property taxes on LI.
What are you doing to keep it that way?
I hope you won't find it an undue burden to disclose your secrets to satisfaction.

i gotta laugh whenever cops complain about working weekends, how dangerous their jobs are , etc. etc. Ummm yeah, didn't you know about this going in ?
We never hear nurses complaining "we have to work weekends !!we have to deal with all these sick people ! There is a risk of disease" !!!
It comes with the territory.
Perhaps by the letter writers' mention of the danger, we should pay our garbage collectors $125k with great benefits so they can complain "we have to deal with smelly garbage everyday" !!!
This is what happens when people are overpaid .. they actually begin to believe they are worth their salaries.

Isnt March a huge parade month here on the Island. Can you imagine how much overtime we are paying to supervise the dangerous parades this month ; I would be interested in finding out how much in overtime we paid in the past three weekends at all the parades

Steve Levy's platform includes reform of the taylor law, so your point makes no sense whatsoever - nice try though, thank you for playing and come back soon.
As for the topic of this thread, it's about the newsday letters to the editor. If you want to find out what those of us who are opposed to the ridiculous compensation and benefits of the SCPD and LI cops in general and some teachers, feel free to start another thread... just don't hijack mine, skippy.
