I looked at Lynbrook when I was house hunting and although affordable, the houses were tiny (in your price range). You can definately get a bigger house in the Hicksville area for the same money amount. That being said, the Lynbrook school district is better than Hicksville.
If you can sacrifice size of the home and make sure you only buy in the Lynbrook S.d., I would take Lynbrook. If you wind up in the Malverne or Valley Stream S.D., I would pass. I would also pass on the East Rockaway s.D. (nice area, but terrible school report card scores).
I am not the biggest fan of Hicksville, it is ok. I bought in Levittown (Island Trees S.D.)for that reason and I love it. I got the big house and the nice school district. You may want to relook at that area. It is a nice location (I am a few blocks out of Bethpage, Massapequa, and Wantagh on either side).
If I'm reading the Census Bureau map of the Lynbrook Union Free School District on page one of this thread correctly, parts of the Village of East Rockaway, the Hamlet of Bay Park, the Village of Hewlett Harbor, the Hamlet of Hewlett and the Village of Valley Stream are in the Lynbrook Union Free School District.
Which parts of Hicksville are better (safer) to live in? What about the School Districts?
With the exception of a small area in the southwest part of the Hamlet of Hicksville, which is in the Bethpage Union Free School District, Hicksville is in the Hicksville Union Free School District.
A map of the Hamlet of Hicksville in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County:
Hicksville is seriously underrated on this message board.
The school district is getting better.
With that said, I'd go for what seems like a better fit personally.. Hicksville and Lynbrook are very different areas.
