^ It should be fine. Some of the homeless will walk through this area and this area seems to have a lot of breakins. But im not sure if youll be unsafe.
The homeless also stroll about through PJV. My friend lived off a side street near CVS/Cappys Carpets. On a few occasions she found strange men on her porch! The would open up the porch door and settle down for a bug free snooze. This was a nice, quiet side street consisting of very old, restored village homes -- not some tumbledown street in a bad part of town.
It was a short amble to Infant Jesus and a little bit of a walk to St Charles. People familiar with the area know that you can divert down one street, come out on this one and save a lot of walking on a busy road. I suppose the vagrants were well aware of this, too.
I know this is an old thread, but I found it while searching some info. What we need to do is get that damn homeless shelter OUT OF HERE NOW!! The area near the train station used to be nice many years ago, but it has only gotten worse over time. The homeless are everywhere there now. I live right in that area and there are homeless in many of the empty houses. I wish I really knew what to do to get this area turned around. It is certainly possible with enough effort.
Its becoming another barrio its almost like E Patchogue in a way or the town of Islip. PJS even has more percentage of hispanics than all of Farmingville, a town known for illegals.
No the teachers haven't always sucked. Mr Jantzen who was the vice principle was a great influence and hands on guy. The teachers were above average and a hell of alot better than today especially on the elementary school level.
Dr Rella used to be the principal of JFK. Awesome, dedicated guy, and Mr Coniglione is the principal of the HS and in my opinion the greatest asset to that school along with a few more teachers, FARRRRRR better than the previous Ms REPP or whoever she was- so out of touch with the kids and reality. Mr Jantzen was great so was Mr Zito, Zamek and my favies Mr friel and Mr Sperber ah the good ole days
You know what pisses me off? My son grew up with dominican and el salvadorian kids that went to NORWOOD who he knew since he was five and he can't even stop and say hi in that area to them without the cops thinking theres some suspicious drug activity going on, meanwhile the REAL drug addicts are the damn bums that bug me for money everytime I go to 7-11 and just the other night after work I saw a cop chasing one out of the old dairy barn area because it looked like he was camped out there. If you are my age or younger there is no way you're getting any of my hard earned money and if you are old and homeless well that is just a disgrace to our system.
..... meanwhile the REAL drug addicts are the damn bums that bug me for money everytime I go to 7-11 and just the other night after work I saw a cop chasing one out of the old dairy barn area because it looked like he was camped out there.
I've completely given up on going to that 7-11 because there is ALWAYS
some stumblebum begging there ! Once , as I was going in , some crumb asked me for a dollar so he could " get something to eat." I gave him a buck , he walked in right behind me and bought a 24 oz Bud !!! I used to feel some pity for these types but not anymore. No more free meals on me. Let them ask Father Frank for their allowance.
I get hit up at the Hess station a lot too. Not just for money but rides also.
Last week , I saw a couple of sinister characters doing ... something .. at that Dairy Barn. It was dark but , it looked like they were trying to break in , and there was a blanket or sheet on the ground so maybe it was the same night you're talking about.
I have a PO Box at the post office and a couple of times when I've gone in late at night after business hours I've found bums in there ( with their shopping carts ) trying to stay warm. It doesn't bother me but I would think a woman going in alone and finding themselves locked in with one of these guys could be a little unsettling.
Do us a favor... before you start labeling towns have your info correct. Islip is not even close to being a East Patchogue.

Honestly, reading these posts one would think that most of the contributors (obviously not all) had grown up in isolation in another era or even a timezone in transition. While the ultimate causes for homelessness, immigration and drug addiction are too difficult to address in any concise fashion on a blog like this, it is still astonishing to me that people will openly divulge their lack of knowledge, education and prejudices so openly and without the slightest introspection.
And Jesserello2, you are so right that the 3.2% of Dominicans in Port Jeff Station (241 people) is a clear tidal wave to local, regional, US and world domination by Hispanics. (And "SAFE34", you are right - of course all Hispanics are illegal). You better prepare now...
But in all honesty Long Islanders, what are you going to do when the economy completely collapses and the amount of homeless triple or quintuple? Please keep in mind these are the economic good times. The rest is very much yet to come. And it isn't drug addiction or immigration that you will be worried about when it does. This is not a born-again prognostication or anything of the like. The non-existence of town planning in Brookhaven or Long Island in general should be a heads-up to those from other parts of the nation looking to move here. Any town planning on Long Island, if it can be called that is conducted by the real estate developers themselves. That is why there are miles upon miles of strip malls here. While there really are no gangs in this part of Long Island (other than Gordon Heights, Bellport and Hampton Bays), heroin use especially among the young, is a real problem and is widespread. In particular, this part of "the island" is a designated export zone for ex-New Yorkers being relocated by state government agencies, so if it looks in part, like Brooklyn and Queens, it is because it actually is.
But again, all of these observations are trivial. By far, the biggest problem on Long Island is that there are no corporations and hence, no corporate jobs. I didn't grow up here, but Long Island has never recovered from the loss of Grumman Corporation, which was the major employer here for a long time. The reason there are so many landscaping jobs is because there is no other form of employment other than menial retail jobs. Long Island gets nearly all of its money from people who work in New York City at real salaries. So, if you are out-of-state, I would look to Montana or Wyoming, which actually has more corporations (and much less people) than Long Island does. The only drawback there is that you would have to do homeschooling for your children to meet any minimum education expectations. Good luck in your pursuit...
