It depends where you live. If your house is within the Southwest Sewer District (covers Babylon, West Babylon, West Islip, and others I cant remember) then you have sewers.

Some parts of Riverhead have sewers, others have cesspools.

It's my understanding that not every home is connected in the area, although I would imagine most are by now.

Just because an area has sewer connections doesn't automatically mean a home is connected.

In some areas yes it does, if the Town/Sewer District made it a requirement that all homes be connected to it by a certain target date. My brother lives in one of those areas (since the 1980s) which is within the Southwest Sewer District.

I'm in Great Neck. We have sewers.

I don't have a cesspool, most homes here do not.

Most of North Babylon has cesspools. However, the parts of North babylon South of the Southern State are hooked-up to sewers. If you buy an older home in North Babylon that has original cesspools they will need to be replaced.
Older cespools were constructed by digging a hole in the ground and building the basin with loose concrete blocks - which means they are weak and can and do collapse sometimes. Because of this I had my old cesspools filled in and new precast ones put in.

Default Suffolk Sewer Districts: Is there a map on-line?

Is there an understandable web site out there that lists all the areas of Suffolk that are hooked up to sewers?
