Default Was on LI 2 weeks ago, very rarely heard a thank you or saw a smile!

What's the deal? I'm an easy going guy. Native LIer, moved to Chicago 5 years ago and was visiting family bIack on the island. went to Roosevelt Field and only about two people said 'thank you" after I held the door open for them. People looked in general not too happy! I couldnt tell if they were stressed or just hung up on themselves! I never remember it being like this before I moved away! Is everything ok on Long Island?

Well Roosevelt Field is probably the least friendly place on LI. I find the ppl in Suffolk County much nicer.

It's definitely always been like what your described - maybe you're used to the friendlier people in Chicago. Although I have to say Huntington Village area has that friendliness you described.

I agree, in the malls people are rushed and rarely notice any nice gesture. I get the same thing sometimes when I'm out--holding the door open for people, or when I'm driving and letting them go even though I have the right of way. No one ever waves as a thank you.

I'm always sure to say thank you and smile when someone holds the door open for me, or wave from my car if someone allowed me to go when it was their right of way.

I think people everywhere don't recognize nice gestures. It's a shame.

I have no problem opening doors for people. It really gets my goat when they cannot say thank you. So, if they do not I make sure I say, very loudly, "Your welcome" The they usually say, "Oh, sorry, Thank you."

Dawnsells....I cant even tell you how many times I hold the gym door when leaving and people dont even look at you. Really gets my goat too and I do the exact same thing you do. Even after saying "your welcome" to them some just look at you like deer in headlights. Very strange...and highly rude!

Smile is contagious.... one smile can set of a million of them.... so smile everyone !!
One thing I have noticed is however bad my day is, after forcefully smiling a couple of times it starts to feel better and then the smiles comes naturally.

Worst thing is when you are following someone into a door and they don't hold the door open and you have to fumble with the door to open it. Terrible manners these days. It seems to be the older generation as well as the younger generation looks like it generally doesn't do this garbage.
