15-25k in taxes is a bargain for some of those homes... lets get real here...
Taxes have nearly tripled for me in the over 12 years I've been here. My house is 1800 sq feet. I'm certainly not getting any more for my money than I was 12 years ago.
If you want to turn this into "rich v. poor" or however you perceive it, start another thread. It's got nothing to do with school taxes.

Garden City is nice very nice. I just don't see how it justifies 15-25 k in taxes. But I can make that argument with anywhere on the Island, that's one of the reasons I moved. Ok, very good schools but I also have very good schools here too. My house and land there would be 25k or better in taxes. 2000 a month in taxes vs. 300 a month adds up. In ten years time that saving almost 200k in taxes and that's not including the 35-40 % less overall cost of living. Add that up and I could send all of my children to Ivy league school and it would be free with the money I saved. You can compare G.C. schools to Midlothian schools, same scores
When the economy is good, people really don't pay attention where their money is going but when it turns for the worse another story. Maybe the people finally woke up! G.C is middle to upper class but not like the super rich of the north shore, its probably hitting them harder, hence the vote.
When the teachers' unions make their way to VIRGINIA, you too can have property taxes like that of Garden City. The famous Ms. Randi W. of NYC went on to bigger and better things and is now working for a national teacher's union. I am sure she wants to conquer the remaining unclaimed territory in the country! Perhaps I should send her an email and let her know that Midlothian VA has nominal real estate taxes and could certainly afford to do much better by their teachers, as dictated by the only "white collar professionals" trade union category in the USA.

What's really hilarious is that you admit you got what you have directly as a result of NYS taxpayers being forced to support public employees with pensions and medical benefits for life no matter how early an employee retires!
Yet you took the opportunity to RUN OUT OF TOWN for lower taxes for yourself.
Too bad the checks and benefits can cross state borders.

I look at it as "well informed about where property taxes are really going" vs. "not informed and cowed by threats of we will take a lot away from the children." Good for Garden City!
Apart from the school, the village taxes in GC seem crazy high. When I looked at MLSLI listings in GC, the total tax was 15k, but it was 11k + 4k village taxes. I am guessing the 11k is about 70% schools.

Of course the teachers can't be touched. They are still demanding increases to their salaries, and that is being negotiated now. Clearly, a lot of their leverage is gone after this vote...and that's HUGE. Administrators have already agreed to a 0% increase next year, and only a 2% increase the following year.
What most people don't realize is that they also get yearly "step" increases. So even in that 0% raise year they'll be getting a hefty raise anyway!
In East Williston Teachers and administrators will be getting a 3.5% increase on July 1 but throw in the "step" increase and the raise will be around 8%
East Williston Teachers & administrators enjoy 20 years of step increases!
Demand zero increases and an elimination of "steps" 25% contribution to medical plans and no more pensions just self funded 401K's

This isn't news CRV1010, your arguments lost. Go crawl in a hole until next year, or better yet- why not get some qualifications and take on this job you feel is so over compensated.
Interestingly, the link that CRV posted with all the salaries, Herricks was rather underpaid, so it cant be the teachers pay as to why it was voted down.
