No teacher works 180 days. The average teacher comes to work about 160 times a year after sick days, personal leave days, emergency days, illness in the family days, snow days etc etc.
I don’t understand how these school districts can approve budget increases that are close to 4% and mainly due to the increase in teacher’s salaries and benefits. School boards have not done anything to reign in teachers contracts over the years and have allowed these abuses to continue. These districts are just pushing the problem down the line; when the federal funding runs out this year all these districts are going to have no choice but severe increase in budgets raising real estate taxes to double digits..
Interestingly, the link that CRV posted with all the salaries, Herricks was rather underpaid, so it cant be the teachers pay as to why it was voted down.

I suppose can't was a bad word. But it surprises me. Compared to other SD teachers in the list, Herricks teachers seemed to be at the lower end of the pay scale.

That just means that pay is more egregious in those other districts, not necessarily that Herricks teachers are underpaid.

I never thought about basing a vote on how the salary compares to other LI districts. It's like saying wow, I didn't think my 6000 sqft house is big because everyone around me has 8000 sqft houses. I just checked it out for 2008-2009, a bachelor degree starts at 51k+ and eventually makes over 100k and masters degree starts at a minimum of 61k+ depending on those educational credits and makes up to 120k. Add in pension, healthcare, and shorter and less days, I say that's much higher than a LI professional in the private sector (eg. computer scientists/engineers with master degrees). And, this is on the lower end of LI teacher payscale?? Can we say overpaid?!?
I'm more surprised that the budgets of sucky schools like roosevelt ever pass. Who in the right mind would want to pay $8000/yr for a 250k shack and a bad school district. There's quite a few of those areas on LI, and it just amazes me that people would pay that much!

I guess it's because they have to or they will lose their home to a tax lien. Hopefully there are many people who have lived there a long time and no longer have a mortgage on top of the RE taxes.
There probably isn't much of a market to sell homes in Roosevelt, what with the insane taxes and the bad school district.
And it once again goes to show that there is ABSOLUTELY NO MERITOCRACY when it comes to how teachers and administrators are compensated on LI. They still make out like bandits no matter how crappy their product is, don't they?
